Richard Dean should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
The factory Team did not make it to Thruxton, only one 2002 Van Diemen car for Alx Danielsson with Team JLR. Apparantly Christian England was quickest today in a 2001 VD but not many Fords at the test.

It is impossible to say who was quickest as there was no official timing. You can't go by people's word or hand held stopwatches.

Precisely.

It's all relavtive anyway. At these tests there is still development work being done. And in short (often interrupted) sessions there isn't much scope for putting down good times.

Thompson went well in the Mygale, Hugh. He's definitely a title contender.

What are VD thinking? Their drivers must be itching to get out there. Any news on whether Westley is staying?

Alx Danielsson should definately show well this year, although might well lack the necessary consistency to maxime his championship position. He should be one of the quickest guys out there in 2002, but like Richard Goransson last year might well disappoint on occasion.

2. Barber
3. Heylen
4. Gaymor
5. Conway

What about Colin Brown? Shorly if he signs up to race for Murray Racing which looks likely he will be a real contender.

For now my top 5 would be:

1.Heylen
2.Thompson
3.Gaymor
4.Daneilsson
5.Barber

In that case I'd put

1.Thompson
2. Brown
3. Barber
4. Heylen
5. Gaymor

Thompson was a lot stronger in the tests than Brown with Murray racing, and Thompson has previous FF experience where he went very well.

Forum Administrators: I hope you're saving this thread for posterity so we can look back at the end of the year and see who was right!!!

Some people do write nonsense in this forum - they've obviously got a vested interest in certain chassis or various subscribers are engine builders. Craig Murray without Van Diemen probably won't win a race, Jonathan Lewis is good but my information is that Alx Danielsson at Team JLR was quickest to-day at Donington in a Van Diemen -Scholar.

I have no vested interest in any one particular element but I do believe my own personal preference for an engine is Solus - from running one in a privateer Van Diemen a few years back.

Mygale I beleive have got a very good car this year - and as VD haven;t been out until today I've not really been able to compare the two.

It seems to me if anyone is biased it's yourself when you say Craig Murray won't win without Van Diemen then say Danielson was fastest in a VD Scholar.

Your information may well be that JLR's driver was fastest today, but I'm sure other teams will say their drivers were fastest too.

When there's no official timing how can you possibly say one was fastest?

Now now boys, I was at Donington today, and according to three Teams I spoke to Danielsson was quickest in a 2002 VD. It was dryish in the morning and different degrees of wet in the afternoon.

Seeing as this origional topic was about drivers and who may do what, what about Ben Clucas. He has been going very well in testing. Anybody know what Team if any, he will be with?

Just payed a quick visit to Oulton Park on my way to college this morning and the works Van Diemen squad are testing along with JLR and 2-3 others.

Going back down later so I'll try to find out exactly who's testing and what the times are like.

As for the person above asking what Ben Clucas is doing in 02 its in motorsportnews this week that he's signed for the former Jamun team in Junior FFord. Quite surprising as I was expecting him to sign for Murray Racing in the senior class after he tested for them a couple of weeks ago.

On Colin Brown he has been offered a free drive in Italian Formula Renault but he wants to stay in the UK.

Apparently Clucas was a second faster than the new Mygale in the old Haywood one.

But I heard he doesn't think he's 'ready' to compete in seniors???

Is it just my imagination but didn't Clucas also do a season in the Silverstone FFord series in 2000. Which means that if he stays in Junior FFord he'll have atleast 3 years experience before he goes up to Senior FFord in 2003!!?? I think its safe to say that if he reckons he's not ready yet he'll never be ready!

Ben Clucas raced in two races of the Silverstone Series in 2000 after graduating from the course with me. He then did the first half of the season with Aztec/Murray, then switched to MDR, again with me (this time me being with a spanner not a steering wheel). Good little racer Ben, good luck to him, nice guy too - buys his mechanics bacon burgers and supplies them with drinks.

When he means 'ready', I think he means financially, his parents are working hard at financing him but as in most cases it's a struggle.

Same situation about who was fastest - how can you really know? But the word was Thompson finally showed well in Murray's Mygale.

i'll be nice!

Based on all the so called 'biased' opinions above, and knowing just enough about FFord I think;

Danielsson
Barber
Gaymore
Heylen
Sakamoto
As always in no particular order.

Sincere opinion... no more no less.

I'm personally hoping the Brits do well but I'm sure either way it will be competitive and interesting - unlike last year.

It seems, from reading your entries, that the mygales this year lack speed. If so, is it driver or equipment related?
