JLOC, when I see that name it remembers me of 2009. After their retirement in lap 1, the drivers and some team members turned into tourist's and visited our camping to take pictures
2010, in a Reiter developed Lamborghini, was a bit better for them. |

Some excellent niche history in this thread, thanks all for sharing.
Amazing how many of these incidents happened close to, but not on, the very opening lap. Can anyone shed any light on the "Autocon" incident? |

If I remember correctly (dominant memory from 2010 is still the Peugeot engine detonations, and it still hurts a bit to recall) Autocon had enormous trouble with the car as soon as they rolled it off the truck from the airport terminal, completed very few laps in practice and qualifying (I see they qualified LMP2 mid-pack with an LMP1 car), and the transmission broke on the first racing lap.

Thanks Pascal. I knew it was early in the race but couldn't remember precisely when. I still smile at the thought of Dorchy turning ninety degrees left instead of right at the end of what was still in those days, the Mulsanne Straight. A classic case of human error.
Another one: Frere/Fairman/de Portago at the Esses in 1956, second lap. All caused by Frere's error. In his autobiography he headed the chapter "mea culpa" |

There is also the Audi #3 puncture on the warm up lap in 2002.
Of course not directly a human error and not on the opening lap. |

Judging by the tone and by what ultimately happened over the course of the week, I'm guessing every single word that came out of Hugh's mouth that week was studiously and steadfastly ignored by the team?

In Hugh's words, at least it broke early so he could go to the pub (without the team though).

Searching back in my very distant memory ................
Didn't a certain Mr Palmer bin the Canon Porsche 962 at Mulsanne Corner on the first lap back in the '80's? Or is my memory playing tricks on me? |

You want opening lap drama at the start of an endurance race?
Have you ever seen the start of the Nurburgring 24 hours? 160 cars in three groups, Lemans is nothing in comparison. Sent from my SM-G928F using Tapatalk |

This is a discussion thread about the start at le Mans. Many of us like the Nurburgring too, so I invite you to open a thread called "opening lap dramas at Nurburgring 24 hours" in the Sportscar & GT Racing level. |

I seem to remember Alexander Premat crashing the R15 on the first lap in 2009 at Indianapolis while being chased by the Astons

In 1954, the #61 Panhard X84 of Eugène Dussous and Jacques Savoye crashed out on the first lap.I haven't been able to find any pictures of the car.
In 1966, the #10 Bizarrini spyder spun as it accelerated away from the start and found itself facing the wrong way. It could have been disastrous, but everyone avoided him: It retired only 8 laps later with clutch failure. |
