Cripes.. I veto any ideas of putting up mug shots of us on here on the grounds that we may break the board with a collective ugliness factor....
Oh, OK, with my ugliness then.. I'm quite happy to remain annonymous.. |

Back to the thread topic I'd say take it slow to start with. Either with the gear you've got (perhaps you'll find a cheap 2nd hand long lens) or with an entry level Digital SLR - it has to be an slr really - they don't suffer from lag and the picture quality of a reasonable quality dedicated long lens is always going to be better than a built in 28-400 on a point and shoot - they focus quicker too. Look out for second hand deals - digital bodies get supersceded so quickly these days - the price is constantly coming down - if you're going to spend lots spend it on lenses as you can keep those.
It's a very competitive area though and only a few people make lots of money from it - but it is terrific fun - get out there, take some shots for us to look at - you'll get lots of helpful critique from the people on the forum here. (Another cost worth mentioning is public liability insurance. I know a lot of naughty people don't bother but some circuits insist on it - about £130 for a year) |

Basically if something happens to you or someone as a result of your actions at the track you're covered for it. I've got it, don't get asked for it very often t hough.

I haven't read the full terms yet but it's basically to cover the property, medical and legal costs of people getting injured by me or my equipment whilst I'm out and about. This might be someone stubbing their toe on my tripod or me and my camera smashing through a cars windscreen and causing a multiple pile-up as I'm mown down in the pit lane.

Photoguard is probably your best bet for PLI, they charge around anoither 60 quid to increase it to the £5m which MSV ask for.

I went to Photoguard, paid £261 for £5000 equipment cover and £5M PLI (for MSV circuits mainly) Most places don't ask for it, but Donington Park did request a copy of my PLI cert for an event recently. Also, you need it for test days, as they are not covered by normal event insurance.

I went with them aswell, seemed like a pretty good deal.
Only ever been asked to produce it at test days, and MSV have it on file. |

Maybe they're less bothered at club events. It would certainly cut down the number of amateurs if they start to insist on it. Incidentally what's the position with marshals? Are they covered by their club/ the circuit? |

I would assume by their club.
But I'm still a little confused by this PLI thing, even though I have it... at race meetings are you covered by the circuit? I've heard this, but at tests there isn't event insurance, so you have to have your own... |
