I have it on pretty good authority that Briscoe is as good as signed - if he hasn't already.

Then again, Toyota twice put Briscoe in formulae that were way too advanced for him at the appropriate stage in his career. When he stepped down both times he looked a lot better. |

Briscoe was absolutely crap in 2005. Let's make no bones about it. Couldn't keep the car in one piece, was slower than his teammates etc....not a single positive.
I do hope he does himself justice at Penske. Certainly there is hope as he had a good run at Indy and he has recovered some confidence in other series. |

Well Briscoe was on his way to win St Pete (I think?) before Kanaan punted him off, so '05 wasn't a total disaster for him. He ran very well at Indy this year too.

Briscoe was very quick on the road courses in 2005 - although couldn't get to the end of a race.

He qualified on the pole for the Sonoma race in 05. He was really good. He just needs to finish races...He's one of my faves. Hope he will have this ride for next year! Go Ryan!

The increase in road and street courses will be a big help of course.

Briscoe would not be my choice. I think i would prefer to take a punt on an up and coming driver, especially as they have an experienced driver in the team already.

Yeah, the level of ALMS driver talent on road courses is far above that of the irl.

Don't know about that. Sascha is a strong driver, but he has made a mini habit of either giving Ryan quite a bit to do, or slightly undoing Ryan's good work.
The way I've heard Penske talking about him seems to establish him very firmly at the top of the ALMS Penske tree... |

Ryan has given Sascha some work to do at times also to be fair.
Both are rather put in the shade this year by Dumas and Bernhard who are as solid as it gets. Given time, Ryan could be as good though. |

So now a Penske Indy car ride goes to second rate sports car driver?
More salt in OW's wound? |

No, he's a reasonable single seater driver who did a detour to be reasonable in ALMS.

Ryan's one off performance in a "Penske" at Indy was enough for me. He was quality all month and looked good. Far better than last time he was in the series certainly (since he kept it off the walls)

When he was at Ganassi, he was simply trying too hard in a dramatically underpowered car. At Indy he had a decent car and made the most of it.
Look at his Formula Renault, Formula Three, and F1 testing results (skip F3000), and you will only see quality. Getting a podium in a Dreyer and Reinbold car is no mean feat either. He will be a revelation in a Penske... |

I just like this series set up to assist US short-trackers to get a shot at Indy.

Seems even further away with the departure of Americans from Open Wheel racing

With Hornish's lack of performance so far in Cup, I think the decision that he is leaving IndyCar is now far from assured.
