Hybrids were banned! McLaren were looking into it (how seriously I don't know). they wanted some energy storage system. I'm not sure how practical it is for racing. However the rules changed so that only one source (the engine) could provide power to the wheels. Panoz actually did race a similar thing in Sportscar.
