Mika's move on TGF in Belgium in 2000 is my favorite. Anybody who has seen the onbaord footage would realise how great the move was. Also from that footage I was amazed at how close they came to hitting when TGF slammed the door on Mika the lap before. I watch that video all the time on my computer and it never gets old!

Jeez why can't i remember hungary 86?!What's wrong with me.I distinctly remember the tv scenes of piquet running awy from them all with a better diff.Have i got the wrong year?
That pass by Hak on shu and the backmarker was pure luck, some of you guys should try racing yourselves....Mansels pass in mexico deserves lots of kudos.
the 2 lap, multi pass battle between arnoux(?)and vilenueve has to be the ultimate that i can remember(only because it was filmed)

If that's the one where Piquet got sideways then that's my fave.

My memory is bad, but Berger in a Ferrari overtook someone at one of the chicane's at Hockenheim.
I think he went on the grass before then nearly went through sideways

Anyway that was cool too

I see that overtaking only started in the 70's/80s........

And ended in the 90's.

Well, Aysedasi the reason for there being no moves mentioned before the 70s are quite simple...

Firstly, there was so much overtaking back then it's hard to perhaps pick out a single move, and secondly, most of us are unfortunante enough to have never watched full length GP's from before the 80s.

I'd like to hear about some moves from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Well I dont know if theres a video of it but I heard Fangio took a nice little shortcut across the grass at the Nurburgring in 1957 to get past someone!

Don't know how true that is though!

Gotta say, I'm with RWC--I wouldn't call Spa 2000 one of the greatest moves of all time. It was an exciting race, with Hakkinen all over Schu in the closing laps with the Championship so tight, but the actual pass was simply a case of having a great tow. It took bravery to aim for that gap to Zonta's right, but I don't think any racing driver in those circumstances would just have lifted and followed Schu through: it had to be worth a look to the other side. I think it was only the lack of overtaking in the couple of preceeding years that fuelled the response the move got, I wouldn't compare it to Silverstone '87, Esoril '96, or even Barrichello's moves at Silverstone this year.

(In no way is this meant as Hakkinen bashing; I'm sure if I put my mind to it I could come up with some better moves he pulled off in F1).

Just flicking through my copy of the 1987 British GP programme (which I now own thanks to garcon and the British postal service ), and there's quite a, now, quite amusing article on Nige in there. Hows this for an opening line:
"If everything goes to plan, Nigel Mansell should win the Shell Oils British Grand Prix without to much in the way of drama.".
Oh how they were wrong! He won it all right, but boy was there drama, good old Nige.

Zanardi should have been penalized for that one. He drove off course. Herta didn't want to crash and let off. Had he drove through normally the pass never would have happened.

Have the same question but apply it to CART. I honestly couldn't come up with a good list. Why? Because passing happened all the time (not twice per season) and the individual passes blend together. Formula 1 is getting better, but it's got a way to go.

top marks for invention though! didn't they put hoardings there the following year to stop people trying a similar thing?

it'd never happen in f1. imagine schumacher pulling that sort of move on anyone....this forum would go into meltdown!

There was no rule on the subject of being on or off-track in CART at the time, Snrub. And it was just a spectacular move, no matter how you look at it.

Fangio on Hawthorne, with one lap to go, on the grass in the '57 German GP, to lock up the championship, his fifth and final WDC. No other single move can compare in significance.

Couldn't find that pass, but this is from a few corners earlier, as he outbrakes Collins into the Nordkurve. Hawthorne's Ferrari is just ahead.

Mansell's overtaking manoeuvres seem to be a leading feature here. I'd probably go for that incredibly quick reactive and opportunistic move on Senna at Hungary in 1989. However, all of his mentioned were brilliant and just serves to confirm my view that whatever else he was, he was definitely the greatest overtaker (and therefore racer?)of modern times.
