The usual start to qualifying. Very slow times with chunks taken out of them as they nicely bring the tyres in.

Now time for Toyota to drop the last sandbags and dominate the qualifying. Also Penske will be dropping them.

You mean practice has finished and now it is a competitive session.
Peugeot had a clutch issue in FP3. Probably fixed now! |

Still many seconds off the expected pole time…
Third lap in and some are still building up. |

Alpine door open!
Third lap from the BMW showing a decent time. Could it be like Le Mans? |

Caddy and a BMW going out a little after everyone else. Not messing around with everyone else. |

Toyota in the 50s. Surprise Kubica didn’t beat it, but Alpine did.
Times a tumbling… |

Very interesting qualy session!
Shame we have to wait so long for the race. May well have to burn the midnight oil to watch the race in full.. |

Ferrari still seems to be the quickest but BMW and Alpine are surprisingly strong. Porsche and Toyota seem to be on the back foot tho.

Indeed, was an entertaining session. Tomorrow we'll see how many places the 6 can pick up and whether the Caddy can finally deliver

The Alpine is fundamentally a very quick car. Look out for them next year. They have had so much learning to do. They were one of the only manufacturers who never tested at COTA before this weekend and there they are in P4. The hot temperatures suit them.

Race pace wise it is looking like Caddy, Ferrari followed by Toyota as the top three and quite close. Demonstrating two different ways to get to similar lap times and potentially two different ways of treating the tyres.
They we’ve got BMW, Alpine and Porsche as the next bunch. All could have their moments. Bringing up the rear is Lamborghini (least testing and maybe over weight) and Peugeot (Peugeot). |

I guess we’ll have some stonking laps at the beginning (tyres perfectly warmed up with two formation laps) and no traffic. Then it won’t be quite so good conditions as it gets hotter, they have to manage and out of the pit stops they haven’t managed the tyres as optimally.
The first half they will be using the worse tyres, doing all the double stints getting ready for the end… Of course there will be something that means this is all a load of rubbish. |

I think so as well. The Oreca chassis is proven with Acura in IMSA and I fully expect them to do next year what Porsche has been able to do this year thus far. I actually expected more from them this year, but I guess it has been a steep learning curve coming to terms with the car. They just need to sort out the engine and they'll be a force to be reckoned with. |

The only issue with Alpine is reliability in longer races I think, the car we know is good, clearly quicker than Lambo, Peugeot some of the 963's and the BMW usually, a very good car, with no huge star names, take note Peugeot, you dont just employ star names to make your car quick, I shudder to think what their salary budget is. And Lambo for that mater.
Nice to see BMW up there as well, but it is the race that counts |
