I do agree in 100% what Neel is saying but for me if application is motrosport not road tuning, pectel strategies are lot better .
paddle shift work perfectly pit speed limiter - there is no way to make is on motec smooth like on pectel FBW -great throttle control or for example gear shift cut.. but all of this take a long time to properly set . i would say to get engine running on motec is one day on pectel you have to spend 3 days but will be running perfectly.. Unfortunately support is really not there user manual almost non existing software wise recently Toolcal get better but i always have descpro as backup .. |

Though when I was using a not so good laptop I too could only use descproW without fear of it doign odd things. The Toolcal interface is just super! I have used everything out there and this is simply the best. I run about 10 different worksheets and its so simple and fast to get what you need to know. Takes a bit of work to set it all up, but once done nothing comes close to it. Pectel = winning. |

These are some more of Toolbox Professional off my new bespoke laptop dedicated for this work, much better than my old IBM 'stinkpad!'

It has the EC card slot and for the CF cards I use a simple $7.50 USB to CF reader (works great) for my stuff I still use a serial port with (for me its two other current ECU's @ work) I have a USB to serial convertor and it works perfectly.... even on this Windows 7 Professional. I am computer illiterate! but this machine is great 'touch wood' its been faultless and works with everything I do and ask of it, battery life is outstanding! (averages more than 10 hours). Here is shot of my desktop and applications I run on it (most all car related on right side) Hope this helps? |

More stuff I wanted to add above
p.s. Wanted to add the new laptop inspired me to organize and clean up all of my files! now its all sorted and backed up each week, here is one list of spread sheets I made up to help mapping the Pectel and also used to analysis on a whole heap of different and interesting engines. One is of an 'interesting' old engine which I have dyno sheets for!!! and the other showing other sheets of engines tested and how these can be used to populate the Pectel main fuel map vastly cutting down guess work and 'suck it and see' 'hobby tunning' efforts. |

Why do the developers in the Race/Car industry insist on using serial ports?

I don't think I've used a serial port for a decade.
That said, using a serial port removes the extra bits required by the FTDI circuitry that would make it on board USB. Cost, maybe? It's really not a complexity issue as it's only one more small IC. |

For me I gave up using the old software and only use Caltool now, I was only using the older DescProW because of the constant crashes with Caltool on an older PC, with the new PC I listed above I have used it for over a hundred hours or more and never ever had one issue or the slightest hint of one. Best advice is get a good PC, mine was dirt cheap and worth every cent! once you get that sorted you will never use the old software again anyway. The Caltool is much much better. |

Dennis,
I have tried to use the Windows virtual XP but every time I go to open Desc I get a fatal error message.... Rice, Yep I am very aware of the back and forth issues between Caltool and Desc (was also a problem with the SQ6/M as well). But sometimes you have an old map that needs opening or an ECU that has older firmware since Caltool doesnt have metafiles that support anything before firmware version 2.53.... so its nice to have it. What build version of Desc do you have? Is your laptop 32bit or 64bit? |

I am running DescProW 3.8 Build 48 on Windows XP running under VMware Player 3.01.
Works perfectly. Also runs OK under Wine for any Linux/Mac types out there. For info, VMware Player is free. I use it lot for trying stuff, dead handy little toy to have lying around. One tip....get a Serial to USB device with settable COM ports....saves a lot of swearing! What error are you getting? |

Desc wont run on 64 bit .. windows 7 32 bit yes..
virtual xp not always working properly there is some problems with communications.. Once you used cal tool you need to restart ecu to have a possibility to use it with desc pro ..if not there will be some "funny" signs ect.......... |
