Talladega has/had an infield road course, too.

I don't enjoy the superspeedway races much, other than the 500 because I'm the kind of sucker they love who gets all caught up in the big stories, big event, super Americana stuff.

I wouldn't say it's at the point they need to cut four of the most popular races from the schedule, or replace them with their road courses (while I love road racing, the TV ratings of road races are really a funny thing in America. The Cup races get less viewers, the Nationwide races get slightly more, the Indy races get twice as many, the F1 races beat Indy all the time, ALMS on ABC beats Indy...so I can't really get any indication of how we really feel about road racing ).

I don't know how to fix the problem, but the racing would be great if they went unrestricted. Fan safety's a priority though, and I don't know how fast is too fast, especially after the Carl Edwards' wreck. The faster they go, the worse that scenario gets.

It's also worth considering that NASCAR's insurer may be the one saying no more than 200 mph/lap. Nothing they can do there...

The 200 mph "barrier" is more of a guideline imposed by NASCAR themselves that has stuck around since 1987 after Bobby Allison tore down the tri-oval fence at Talladega.

We had an 80's flashback in the Bud Shootout this year though when they averaged 205-206 mph, which I thought was cool to see.

NASCAR ran tests at Daytona yesterday. Read report here http://www.nascar.com/news/111115/da...rby/index.html . So a smaller deck spoiler and a bigger plate simply made the car faster through a reduction in drag, but no less comfortable to drive. Time to try keeping the spoiler, but getting rid of the plate, to establish what the lap speed of a single unrestricted car, out of the draft, might be, methinks....

It's going to take something radical to stop the two car drafts isn't it? Maybe worth giving an unrestricted car or cars a go like you suggest Clive - although they may have already done this during the COTF development.

Might have to be something like changing the support structure on the front of the car so that any rubbing buggers up the aero on the rear car.

In some ways, I find the commitment required from the rear car in particular to be riveting in these two car drafts but it really is a crying shame to see so many drivers missing out on the opportunity to win it in their own right just because they are the pusher when the time comes.

Be good to see the back of it but it seems to me that NASCAR aren't getting quite radical enough yet to achieve it.

worked out ok at 'Dega though, because of where the finish line is allows for the potential drag to the line. I guess we aren't going to get a move of the Daytona start/finish line though are we...
