Chris Gamlin should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Magneticlly operated valves use a solenoid to open and close the valve, and don't use any kind of camshaft like in a conventional engine. I can imagine they do have huge advantages in that valve opening could be continuiously varied for different rev ranges/power loads etc (much like an engine map for the fuel injection) and can have much more aggressive opening/closing velocities due to not being limited by the cam. Power usage of the solenoids is obviously a big issue, but then I imagine you gain most/all(?) of this power back from the engine by not having to run a cam in the first place.

koenda should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
BMW's new engine got variable valve-lift, it's not operated by solenoids or hydraulic pressure but cam-driven.
It will be in the 316 in June or July I believe, and not in the M because it doesn't operate well at revs >6000 rpm.
