Heat is not that big a problem if you go straight up and down to 100km or so, Space ship one flew to 100km plus and only reached about Mach 3, around 2000mph on the way down, there's enough heat to be an engineering problem but it's not that extreme. Re-entry at orbital velocity at speeds approaching 18000 mph requires dissipation of about 80 times as much energy (kinetic energy is proportional to the square of the speed) its in a different league.
Re-entry from a Lunar flight at about 25000 mph is almost double the energy of an orbital re-entry which is why Apollo had such a mighty heat shield which was used in a "skipping" re-entry kind of re-entering twice to spread out the heat load. |

Baumgartner did it coz he was sponsored, Kittinger did it as part of his job, end of story
And Baummoaner spent months being a wuss about it all too! Do you think ge would have ever managed it without Red Bulls help, no, which is why I dont rate anything he does |

Really? He couldn't afford to do it himself so he went out and found someone willing to finiance it for him - what's wrong with that? Kittinger did it as part of his job - does that make it any more worthy? He was just doing what he was told - if he hadn't done it they'd have just got someone else to do it.

Yes, it is off topic.
And there is gravity in space. Otherwise the Universe would be a very different shape. |

Making money from F1? Well, id say making it from purely the f1 side of things then its pretty much impossible however some teams have other parts of the company group that do make money. For example Mclaren have the road car, GT, hospitality and applied technologies sections.
Williams have the hybrid power part of the company which make hybrid systems for other manufacturers road and race car programs which has made alot of money. |

No-one could have done this without sponsership (Kittenger was sponsored by the US government and hence the tax payer) , or without help (Kittenger had government scientist), so your last sentence is cobblers. Interesting that no F1 team can survive without sponsorship, or vast amounts of staff helping the drivers round the track. Not really much different to Baumgartner really. As for being a wuss. If I was going to jump out of a balloon at 36km, I'd want to make absolutely bloody sure absolutely bloody everything was right. If that makes me a wuss, so be it. |

I think that owning an F1 team is vastly overrated. The minute that you hand over $5, or whatever, for HRT, you may think that, at that point, you have a bargain, that is until someone hands you the electricity bill shortly after signing on the dotted line.

You do get the feeling that "Brewsters Millions" would have been a much shorter film if Richard Pryor was a Formula 1 fan.
