Hope it turns up as a GT3 or GT4 car somehow. It was bad enough that the Alfa 8C GT3 project never came to fruition.

it's hard to find pics of a car that doesn't exist...

but anyway, there is an assetto corsa mod for the 8C gt3

recall back in 2013 there were rumors about a 4C GT4 made by a third party tuner, but nothing happened for real actually.

Maserati has repeatedly stated they will be going racing with the MC20, supposedly as a factory effort. Wouldn't the GT3 class be the obvious choice?

Was that before or after Covid 19, things may have changed, budgets for racing certainly will have been

gt3 in its core is more a customers oriented racing. At best MC20 will be used for maserati trofeo IMHO

Should at least reduce Maserati’s options to GT3 spec or GT4.

Seems like GT3 Will becomes the top tier gt formula, with all pro lineups allowed in things like WEC

it's not that the issue; there are alredy full or partially factory backed gt3 programs in VLN, BES, nurburgring/spa 24H etc...
it's just I don't think the actual maserati, a manufacturer that is trying to find his way inside the market after cutting ties with ferrari, is interested in a gt3 or whatever factory effort.
The maserati "official" programs of last 10-15 years were heavily backed by ferrari for the MC12 GT1 and by swiss team for V8 superstar series, the same private effort that built the Maserati granturismo MC gt3.

The main consequence is that as soon as GT3 becomes a class in WEC/Le Mans it opens the possibility for full works teams. SRO likely wants to keep its series customer-oriented in the future too and if not outright ban (umm Bentley?) then at least discourage works teams.

Maserati and its Corse (MC) department was of course also heavily involved in the Gran Turismo GT4 program. In fact, the first race entries were by the factory, which led to race wins in the European GT4 Cup in 2010. The GT4 effort then morphed into the Trofeo series (due to lack of interest by private teams to buy the car, I presume...), but upon returning to GT4 racing some years later (2015, if I remember correctly), the cars were all run by private teams, and quite successfully so in various European and North American GT4 series.

That would be very strange after all the fanfare, the presence of Bertolini and CEO's big quote "We're going back to racing!" at the MC20 unveiling.

I see really unlikely to update a based street car to LMH specs.
For sure it can be done according to regulamentations, but forget to reach performance window of a bespoke prototype.

I think the range of alternative classes for the Maserati MC20 is likely to be from GT4 to whatever GT3/GTE equivalent class FIA etc. eventually decide.

Maserati has a ton of recent experience from GT4 racing with the Gran Turismo MC GT4, but mostly through customer teams. The factory effort with the Gran Turismo GT4 focused on the early years (2009-2010) and then the Trofeo series.

I would be very surprised if the factory gets directly involved in GT4 this time, although a GT4 customer version of the MC20 may make sense, just like Aston Martin, Mclaren, and Mercedes provide GT4 cars to private teams.

However, a GT3/GTE factory-backed effort makes 100% sense
