As far as I know the driver suffered a heart attack and has died, that was the reason why the race was not re-started after the drivers were stopped at the startline.
I don't have any further information, I have not seen any mention online Last edited by Tango Tango; 6 Sep 2008 at 20:46. |

Not having a pop or anything but I would have held off on saying something like that Tango Tango, at least until it is definately confirmed or until you are 100% sure that it is bad news. Just in case. Just my humble opinion.

I was at the meeting, the driver did suffer a heart attack. He was not driving at the time, the cars were stopped on startline under parc ferme conditions. County paramedics were also called to the circuit. When the news came thru that the driver did not pull thru, a meeting was held with all the drivers and a decision was made not to continue. I was not going to post, but i feel to post information that is correct before it leads to idle gossip. My thoughts go out to the family & friends Gary Last edited by gachjoel; 6 Sep 2008 at 20:59. |

Hi Gary.
I wasn't implying that the post was incorrect etc, it's just that the poster said AFAIK. In the current "legal climate" I was just inferring that I would have held of the post until it was 100% what the outcome was. Terrible news & my condolances to the drivers family & friends. Unfortunatly that meeting has had nothing but bad luck this year. Thanks for posting up the information Gary. See you both again soon I hope. But hopefully not with our cleaner friends waking everyone on the campsite up at 4 in the morning & trying their best to test everyones diplomatic realtions to the limit. |

It is unfortunate that we were on Post 8 opposite the pit lane and were down with the drivers after the race was stopped.
That was the reason given by several drivers shortly before they had a meeting and decided that they would not continue with the event. I spoke with a competitor as I was preparing to leave who was apparently a team-mate of the person involved who confirmed the information that was already given however I wont enlarge on what passed between us, but he was clearly deeply affected by the events of the day understandbly so - especially as having apparently had the car handed off to him shortly before the incident. It is also worth noting that the Police were in attendance at the circuit as we were making ready to leave. I would like to express my condolences to the family and friends of the driver. |

on reflection I realise that my choice of words was not the best, I want to apologise, I certainly did not mean to offend anyone. Being on post 8 when the events unfolded has given me a lot to think about.
I (like others) would like to express my condolences to the family and friends of the driver. |

Can I personally thank all of the Marshals who marshaled our event yesterday which unfortunately was prematurely stopped under sad circumstances.
I will be writing to you all personally over the next couple of days but in the mean time, many thanks again and I look forward to seeing you again in the future at one of our events. Many Thanks Gary BRSCC(SW) Chief Marshal |

News from the VW Fun Cup main site
08 September 2008 - Fun Cup - David Byers It is with the utmost regret that we must confirm the sudden and tragic death of our fellow Fun Cup competitor and friend, David Byers. David, who lived in Co Dublin, Ireland, suffered a massive heart attack on Saturday, 6th September, at Pembrey Race Circuit. He was 55. David had been an assistant principal architect in the Office of Public Works (OPW) in Ireland, prior to being appointed as one of its three commissioners in 2001. He was responsible for managing the state s portfolio of over 4,000 properties. He worked on many major public projects, such as the installation of a conference centre in Dublin Castle and the renovation of Government Buildings in Merrion Street. In his private life, he was an avid motor racing enthusiast and served as a director of Mondello Park in Co Kildare. He was also involved in organising motor racing in Phoenix Park. David was a familiar and regular face at Fun Cup meetings in 2005, 2006 and 2008 and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Our deepest and most sincere condolences go to his wife, Ann and to his family. |
