FWIW this is the Group C race at Spa in May. However that dosn't really matter. It is the levels of trees, the rain/mist and the gradient and and and...

I always did like a man in matching leathers!...Nice shots Andy!!...tell me though, at York Dragway I stuffed some tissue in my ears for the jet car...bloody glad I did as well!!! Do you use any ear-defenders of any particular type?

Thanks Baz. I had run out of film in my old EOS 1000 just before I took these two so used a backup of a cheap Nikon Coolpix 2 meg digital. Quite pleased considering.
I just used some freebie Vauxhall ear plugs I picked up at a Toca meeting once. Never need them anywhere else as racing is too quiet these days ( especially Toca!!) not even for F1, but you would in the Monaco tunnel I guess! Could be 'cos I'm deaf anyway from a lifetime of motorsport and Led Zeppelin! But drag racing is something else again noise wise. It still hurt with the plugs, especially that close with the correct credential. A bit scary too, especially when Top Fuellers launch as often blower belts and bits of molten engine can go everywhere. With 6500 horses all trying to get out at once it's no suprise. I've seen parts go in the stand at the Pod, but this was before the superchargers were tethered for safety as they are now incase of blow-up. That nitro mix from the exhausts really stings the eyes too if you get too close. Must be the most non-eco friendly Motorsport on earth but GREAT! If you have never been you will never understand. |

cut my teeth on dragracing!!
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/kelvin.fagan/dragracing/ As a side note, one of the guys I used to take photos for, Jay Upton, was crowned Top Bike champ in Australia last week, he also holds the record for fastest fuel bike in OZ. 219 mph in 6.19 seconds. I always liked this photo, taken with a little 1.3 mega pixel Fugi camera.
Not a particularly brilliant shot, but loved the way it caught the reflecting "leaping cat" . |

It's so immaculately prepared as well, it was just as fun watching that then the other cars too, although Verdon-Roe in that Ligier was sliding the rear of the car almost everytime though Club! Couldn't really get a decent photo though So in the end I just stood and gazed at it everytime it came past!

Here's a couple I took at Western Sydney International Dragway in Australia,
first up is Kelvins mate, Jay Upton seen here nearing the finish line (approx 350m mark) at 216 MPH last but not least is an ex-pat pom Steve Read in Santo Rapisarda Top Fueler same place, same spot, but about 80 MPH faster. Last edited by mixxer; 21 Aug 2004 at 18:16. |

Jay and the beast, incidently Kelvin, Jay has shipped the bike over to the US to compete in a few races then when he returns to Aus he may change to 4 wheels (not sure what class but the roumour is Top Fuel or Funny Car)
and how does the fastest and quickest bike in Australia move around the place ? a flashy semi trailer maybe..... maybe a large coach out fitted with all the best gear............. Not Jay hes got it all packed away in his workshop away from home, the venerable shipping container Last edited by mixxer; 21 Aug 2004 at 18:31. |
