Gentlemen thanks so much for the input I really appreciate it! Morninggents what a brilliant nugget regarding lightly tacking the numbers under the bootlid!

In true Blue Peter fashion we had "sticky backed plastic" by the roll and made our own numbers until well into the 80s. IIRC they peeled off badly and left nasty shadow marks which were really difficult to clean off.

Aha, but one trick was to apply car polish to the panel first before sticking on the (er?) sticker, then polishing off around it. That made them easier to peel off again afterwards and helped to prevent the residue leaving a mess.
