Its quite normal at brands for spanners to hitch a lift - but the absent minded driver must be feeling very embarrassed

Sam I am not sure he knew the mechanic was on board.
Maybe JP can add that type of ride to his PalmerSports days!!! |

Whilst I realise the seriousness of the situation, I can't help but think the mechanic should be added to EPs list of odd things to ever fall off a car.

Very scary...we used to regularly hitch a ride back to the paddock on FF1600/FF2000s etc but you made sure the driver was going there and slowly!

ive hitched rides on the back of a pit trolley being pulled by a quad and thats bad enough. question is the number one rule on most single seaters is not to push or pull excessively on the rear wing. Ive been told that as being a marshal and working on singleseaters!!
If only someone there had a camera or video of it!! |

I spoke today with the CTS in charge on Friday. The team told the driver to go to the outer paddock as the car could not run with out the battery being fitted. The mechanic had permission to to ride on the car to keep the battery connect so that the car could retern to the Outer Paddock. The driver was pointed to the tunnel but IGNORED the direction and went out ( This was the second time that this driver went onto circuit instead of the Outer Paddock). When hauled up to Race Control the driver complained about the session being stopped as he did not know what he had done.

If he didn't know what he had done wrong for the second time IMO it's time to introduce whatever Licence he has to the shredder. |

But I thought it was discussed before that he could only be banned from MSV test and circuit days as the Brands day was MSV endorsed, not MSA or FIA?

Yes, and when I said change the rules, it doesn't need the huge upheaval suggested - all that's required is for incidents on tests like this to be able to be submitted to the MSA for consideration.

For the MSA to have reports submitted on incidents that happen on test days then a permit has to be issued with all the increased costs assoiciated which have to passed on to the drivers. It will mean that every spin and incident will require a written report and verbal report ( verbal reports clog up radios and written reports distract the lone marshal on the post from their primary role of flagging and reporting more serious incidents than a simple Spin and Continue) and a lot more paper work for the CTS ( who is busy enough as it is)

If anyone cares to know, the mechanic involved is doing fine. He was in the hospital in the UK for some time, and has now returned to New Zealand, about 5 days ago. Wed this week he will require some more surgery on the ankle, but the suspected head injuries were just that; suspect. Besides the few stitches he received, there was no head trauma. He will be off work for a while (2 months probably) and then hopefully off wings for the rest of his days!!
Cheers. |
