Peter Canary's Eagle at LM in the late 80's was not so ugly but desperately slow and stupid in conception. And the new Ford Gt 40 in race version will be ugly too.

Take a pretty open Lancia, buy some GRP and sellotape & hey presto you end up with this.....
Maybe not the worst ever looking car, but its close when you consider what it used to look like. Big pat on back to whoever names the car, venue & year. Last edited by Nordic; 4 Jul 2003 at 10:23. |

Lancia LC1- the Gp6 barchetta that Martini Racing ran in the first year of Group C, modified to a Gp C car by the Sivama-Grifone team (hink that's the correct name) in 1983.
Circuit looks like Silverstone- didn't Mark Thatcher drive for them at one point, or was that earlier when they ran Gp 5 Beta Monte Carlos? As you said- how to butcher an originally pretty car in one easy lesson.... Last edited by KA; 4 Jul 2003 at 10:37. |

Thats right KA - 83 silverstone, the drivers for this one No 51 , (there where 2), where Sigula/Larrauri
Mark Thatcher did drive one of the Grp 5 beta's in 82 at silverstone. |

I'm still searching out a picture of the ugliest racecar ever (any type of major series) that date back to 1963 0r 1964...
Smokey Ynunnick build a car for the Indy 500 that literally look ed like a motorcycle side car mounted to a flat frame with a big engine sitting right next to the driver...Butt Ugly... But I cannot find a pic of it anywhere (and it would probably be copyrighted anyway... Tim Scroll down and you will see there is a head on picture of the Capsule car from the 500, your right its not a nice. [/B][/QUOTE] Capsule car |

WOW! You guys are really outdoing each other with this topic! I liked the MAC-IT's plaid upholstery.
But this thing from edu, well, I am really not sure what to say...it must be the forerunner of the Daytona Prototype class, which is now looking better all the time-considering the potential alternatives that may come from Brazil! |

http://store.racelegends.com/default...skudatarq=1040 Going back to Can Am though- as Tim said earlier, the rules allowed teams to come up with all kinds of madcap creations- but madcap and ugly doesn't neccessarily mean unsuccessful- remeber the Chparral 2J? You could call it ugly, but it was so fast they banned it.... http://www.vicelford.com/gallery/7large.jpg http://www.vicelford.com/gallery/23large.jpg Last edited by KA; 4 Jul 2003 at 17:30. |

Some wonderful photos on Vic Elford's site- the Shadow again:
http://www.vicelford.com/gallery/6large.jpg (It isn't until you see a pic of the actual car with a driver in it that you appreciate just how weird it was....) |

Wow, that looks really compact, like open top version of the 80's Ecosse C2.

The car of the photo was constructed in Brazil in 1965, by Bica Votnamis. It known as "Caçador de Estrelas" (Star Hunter). The engine is of Corvette V-8. Never finished a race.

Hey, edu, a Corvette V-8? Mercy! What sort of class did this car race in? Was it meant for the long distance over the road races?

The "Caçador de Estrelas" is a good idea, one good way to make one car with mid engine and small space between the axles. But it does not seem to be safe Other Brazilian cars of the time: Karman Ghia Porsche , Fitti-Porsche , Fitti-Volks 3200 (two VW flat-four), Brasinca 4200GT (Uirapuru) , etc.. The best ones of this time were in the Copersucar F-1 team |

edu, thanks! The Karman Ghia is great (I want one!), the Fitti-Volks is wild. I have no skill with Portuguese, the Fitti-Porsche was based on a 550 RS Chassis? That is a nice looking car! It is no small wonder Emerson developed car handling skill looking at some of the things he was playing with.
I am a VW nut, and I have never seen that double bug. Wow. These races were on a track, or over the public roads? |
