Now comes the news that TRG are to race the McLaren Mercedes originally intended "only as a one make Gentlemen's Racer". It will be interesting to see how it does and then contemplate how many exist

The F1 Le Mans and GT projects were pretty heavily focused on privateer money rather than factory team + sponsorship.
I guess it all depends whether the privateers want to jump on board and run a McLaren GT car. I dare say there'll be a few who will |

P1 could also be a reference to a future Le Mans project .
The F1 was supposed to be F1 technologies put in a road car. Perhaps the P1 is the same, just reversed. |

That thing will never race, I'm sure of it. They have to downgrade it massively, that thing has 1000hp and KERS. It doesn't seem logic at all to downgrade that, just for racing.
How many road cars do you know with similar hp figures that were turned into race cars? Exactly, none. McLaren will continue racing with the MP4-12C. |

If the Le Mans rules ever got opened out a bit it would be amazing to see this thing.
Or a hybrid supercar 'GTLM' class or something similar. |

“Our aim is not necessarily to be the fastest in absolute top speed but to be the quickest and most rewarding series production road car on a circuit,” McLaren Automotive managing director Antony Sheriff said. “It is the true test of a supercar’s all round ability and a much more important technical statement. Our goal is to make the McLaren P1 the most exciting, most capable, most technologically advanced and most dynamically accomplished supercar ever made.” |

P1 won't be raced. No point.
However....MP4-12C GTE on the other hand... |

Doesn't look anything like a Vette DP. Maybe the canopy shape and width, but it's aerodynamics probably put the DP to shame. This ISN'T the final car (it's called a design study). So it may look different in some ways when it's in production.

P1 can mean 1st position. So the lingo goes in line with what Ron Dennis has said about the car and what they want it to be.

There really should be a LM class for this type of exotics. I can think of several cars that fits - P1, Agera R, 918, CX75, Avendator, Huayra, Enzo successor. Just have them meet FIA safety standards for racing and slap on slicks. Call the class "GTP" for old times sake.
