Ok: as long as I'm not wasting time for anyone inc me!
I'm going to do one on the historics site so can copy much of that across.

Finding the specialists is quite easy. Finding parts is almost impossible...
This is why i bought another running/complete kart (this hammerite special) as it needs almost no original parts bar the seat stays.
Can't even find them, so DIY for those.

I know very little about these things, but I'll be wiser when done!

I'm about to start work on a fake or recreation to be less harsh of a 80s racer, mainly because I have'nt got anything that is old enough for that era so Im going to backward engineer a DAP I have sitting around. After that I reckon its a rebuild of my early 90's Zip back to S1 spec, just for a bit of fun.

That sounds a good project for all to see!
We could turn this into Restoring and Old Kart thread?

Off to the Kart Show this morning in Coventry. Historics are there with a stand and there is a Kart Boot Sale.
Just might find some illusive seat stays in the oily mess.

The plastic are 'orrid to say the least!

The Kart is very original with just a few bits welded on which can come off asap.
The Tillot seat that came with it is painfully tight so will go and it will get a Barlotti type replica, a new tank and a new floor to replace the delightful aluminium checker plate one off the cart.

Once the new seat is in I can tear the lot apart and get the chassis blasted and powder coated and the detailing then starts!

What's the vintage of the fuel tank ? I'm on the hunt for a 1980s floor mounted, strap secured, cube with a slant tank for my Deavinson.

The tank is from a Deavison.
It was on my Kart fastened by 4 through bolts.
A guy on the historics is 'after' it.
The filler though has been modified with an neck from something else and siliconed into place.
Not sure it is worth much as it is not correct and modified.Pity as I think it is the real period piece.

I will fit a new Barlotti tank, a totally different shape and correct.

It doesn't sound like the one I'm after... I think what you have is the old 1970s one which used to have the chrome filler cap on it and was bolted to the floor.

The tear-down continues and I'm down to a bare frame with all the modification welds removed, the new seat (that fits me) with its new seat stays all done and brazed up. The axles are out/off and there is only a little play in the front king-pin bushes. These will be replaced with needle rollers. The kingpins are in great shape as are the wheel bearings.
Surprising how heavy the rear solid axle is.

Brakes off and apart with a few sorry spots, but all doable and easy to restore.

Sure is easy working on cars compared to race cars!

Cold in the garage today....but thanks for the comments.
A few hours stripping down the Appleby brakes show good pistons, my spare rear is better than the original rear and I've a growing family of them!

The threads for the bleed nipples are weak/gone so some restoration needed, parts ordered off ebay.
Taking things apart is easy!

Soon time to send the frame away for a blasting and powder coat in chrome yellow. Should be black, but a bit boring in black.
Box of bits to be chromed is quite large (£).
Still lots to do!

Will you let us know where you get the dipping/chroming done as most places seem uninterested in doing this for a small number of small items i.e. bumpers, columns, nerf bars etc... and/or the quality of the chroming is very poor.

Chrome will be done at Chrome Restoration Services in Stafford.
They showed at the Classic Car Show recently and understand 'our' needs.
Mrs Hillclimber seems against the cost of powder for the frame, so Smoothrite it is. Saving about £100 by using a rattle can approach, so that will pay for the brakes, bearings (that arrived today) the fasteners and the rear disc (when I find a 3 mm thick one.)

Getting ready to paint and chrome now.

Not sure, but they quote you when they get the parts.

Estimates from their sales sheet:

Door handle: £12.50
Window winders: £9.50

Never used them before, so fingers crossed.

I gave up on the idea of rebuilding my kart when I found out 100cc karts aren't welcome anywhere no more, if anyone wants a very shabby kart in bits needing a lot of work and quite a few bits pm me. It'll all go for free I'm gonna scrap it otherwise.

It's as good as finished!
Been a hard job and far more expensive than i thought, but to me, a very nice old kart.

Expect to take it to Silverstone Classic in july to show off (and just maybe run too)
