Thought I'd be clever-get monday off work and enjoy the concert with a few beers ,stay in the tent overnight and miss the traffic-then got stuck in the jam on the M40 for a burnt out car-normal 2 hour journey took 4 hours.

Dan

I know where you are coming from. Thursday towed to pitch by TWO quad bikes. Saturday morning car towed out because it had sunk! Sunday evening TWO quad bikes in convoy tow car and tin tent to top of the hill. I left campsite to head back to Southampton at 5 pm. Followed diversion through Silverstone village where the traffic marshals where taking the signs down that directed people right at a roundabout to go somewhere? I dont know where? I was unaware we were able to follow circuit roads to head south and out of the circuit. I followed A43 to M1 then followed M1 to M25 and eventually the M3 and home. A 100 mile 2 hour journey there turned into a 143 mile return journey home taking 4 1/2 hours. To say I was tired and p****d off when I got home was an understatment.

One thing the guys on the quad bikes deserve my thanks. With out them I dont think very much would have moved either in or out over the weekend.

May be there is a lesson to be learned here?

Yep buy a road map! A5 at Towcester across to Bicester , then back on to A34 straight to Southampton.

The local roads system has to cope with a huge amount of traffic on one day and they generally manage it well but they have always directed different traffic in the most suitable direction as possible. That doesn't stop you taking a deviation from that route at the first opportunity if there is a more suitable option available (hence the need for the map)

Still far better than years ago when it would take two hours just to get to the main gate!!

as said above - its fairly easy to fathom with a road map, or local knowledge, I live in Hertfordshire near the A1, head to the A5, then if thats mucky head for the fast sweeping roads off of it either side - you'll get home. Going the Dartford side take the A1 then then off at Stevenage, Ware, Harlow, M25 - this is only if the M1 and A5 are mucky though.

Going the otherside - theres loads of roads heading south if you can double back on yourself and head toward oxford

and NEVER EVER TRUST SAT NAV!!!! or follow me - I get lost.

TomTom worked wonders for me, I'm sure it screamed though when I went the wrong way down the dual Carriageway!

Saw a couple of cars + caravans being towed out this morning, but for the most part things seemed to be moving well. We left at about 10 with no problems.

Had a great weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the whole event.

I was just concerned that I might have spilled my coffee too.

I suspect we may have wandered a tad OT here

I'm not sure we have, the title is 'getting out of sillystone' and we got a lot out of it.

Dan, I live in Essex and am a regular at Silverstone. Here is the best way home South on busy days at Silverstone. You turn left out of the campsite and go around the perimeter road to Becketts area. You pop out on the Wittlebury road but turn right for buckingham. At Buckingham you need the Aylesbury road then A41 all the way to M25. Done this 2 years running left at 6pm and been home in two hours towing the tin top! M25 was a pig the other way on Sunday East to West as it had all the Tour de France traffic coming back from Kent. Check out your maps it works. I would also like to express my thanks to the Quad bike drivers, without them we would not have got on or off the field.

There are several ways out of Silverstone but if we tell you them now you will forget them by next year. After 26 GP's the best advice I can give is to stay on the camp site for at least 11/2 hrs until they take down the traffic lights then the traffic starts to move again.
