The Audi R10TDi
Seriously, this car marks a turning point. Why do race cars have to be so noisy that we have to take extra measures to stop our hearing being damaged? Despite which, I suspect, many of us will have suffered some hearing loss as a direct result of hearing those wonderful engines at close quarters over many years. Historically, Aston Martin AMR1/04 as a petrol engined deafener tho.. Callaway V8 |

On the other hand, David Piper's Ferrari at Shelsley MAC centenary... Finish paddock actually asked him to run the engine on the way down after his last run and to give it a 'blip' at each marshals' post. The thing wasn't even running properly. Lovely. Failing that, anything with a good Rover V8. |

Clark's Lotus 49 and Senna's Lotus 98T. Back in the days when F1 sounded gooooood
Forgot to add, the Peugeot 908 HDI FAP whatever the hell it's called, the whoooosh that thing makes as it hurtles past is eerie. Yet to witness it for real, but TV alone makes my spine tingle! Last edited by Hepatic; 30 Jul 2008 at 08:59. |

A sound so sweet I called myself the same! The gorgeous Sauber Mercedes C9/89.
Then the AMR1/04 and finally a Brooklands Bentley (cica 1930's iirc) I saw go up the hill at Barbon Manner a couple of years ago! Awesome sound! |

I know it's a rally machine but the Hyundai Accent WRC was an awsome sounding machine at full pelt. I want one still.

Nothing like the sound of a Porshe917k, Lola T70, Ford GT40, Ferrari 512.

I know it isn't a car engine (although a few have made it into them) but it has to be the Merlin engine.
I love that sound, one of the best bits of the Revival meet, is hearing the Spitfires all weekend long buzzing aroud. |

Has to be the Panoz LMP that ran at Le Mans back in the early 2000's. I remember standing in the grandstand above the pitlane, and you could still hear it as it accelerated down the Mulsanne. Compared to it the current diesel LMP's sound like turbo-charged hairdryers.

So many great sounding cars over the years, thats why I'm half deaf these days.
Any F5000 from the 70's, Allan Moffits Trans Am Mustang at Bathurst and the Colin Bond Ford Escorts in the Canberra forrests are all good starting points. The Sprintcars at Knoxville and Eldora collectively sound great. Also the Corvettes in the ALMS sound (and look ) unreal. Lastly was at the Isle of Man a couple of years ago and the MV Agusta's did a parade lap including Ago before the Senior TT - that was the best! |

Ferrari 312PB. The flat 12 Ferrari engined sports and single seaters sound fabulous.
Matra's V12 definitely worth a mention too. |

im surprised noone has mentioned the old porsche 996 GT3 RSR, that was a terrifyingly loud car and god it made an astonishing sound, but the zytek 07S2 on straight exhaust pipes screaming past on the back straight at full chat at petit lemans at night takes some beating, you could hear that car and tell what it was a long time before you would see it.
the lola B05/40 AER of RML and ASM portugal is a memorable sound as well, at full chat it makes a lovely sound even though its only a 4 pot turbo and the judd GV4 4.0 V10 engined LMP cars made a brilliant noise, metro 6R4 rallycross made a glorious noise, volvo S40 supertourers made a ballistic sound and the current BMW 320 SI tourers coming towards you at full chat make a great noise as well. |
