Seems ignition systems are one of the things being checked this year along with capacity and weight so points means prizes and electric systems get you chucked out. Many of the cars at last LMC got punished for this with all/most of T70's being docked 1 min per race

here some noise from the middle of the grid. mallory with modified cam and single points. electronics are better but this is the way to do it. no more wobbly lucas distributor shafts. I got one of those old Alen distributor testers in my workshop. Lucas is perfectly alright if you don't care about wobbly 5 degrees differences in spark

I trust all of you will be using period coils, HT leads and spark plugs too!!
Some period 5 star would be nice though... Recreating period spec points that are no longer available is one thing but can't see the difference (in terms of historic purity) between very basic electronic ignition and specially adapted points by Mallory, or whoever |

I have fitted different sets of points in things over the years if I couldn't find anything available, it ain't rocket science. But I can see the argument on its not original. But lets face it I doubt if there are many (or any) cars racing today that are using solely period original parts. Last edited by GORDON STREETER; 30 Jan 2008 at 22:06. |

What actual points are you after Terry. Are they the 423153 (yes I've been about) Lucas one's that used to fit "everything" in the world.
Joking aside what problems do you get with pattern points. |

Quite major one's. I'm not too keen on the low tension wire shearing at the connection to the condensor!.I know there is a huge amount of vibration on these engines but have never experienced a problem like this before.I have literaly just come off the phone to a very well known Mini racer/tuner who has given me another number to call.See-ing as I have the Lucas 45 fitted there is not much choice at the moment,I could revert back to the 23 type dizzy and use new [re-made] Cooper S points though. |

You note I did say "points" and that type didn't come with the wire. the LT wire was part of the plastic bush that slipped into the side of the dizzy.
Email me a picture of the points you need . |

I cant access your site Gordon so here goes. Where black meets orange there is a metal plate, you can just about make out that the wire is broken just where it is crimped to the plate, you can see the black wire is just dangling in mid air------ apparently this gap was too wide.!!!!

Its not but probably more legal to the spirit of FIA regs than some I have read here as the important components that make the real difference (certainly not points) like engine capacity and the the original amount of 4 cogs in the gearbox and the right back axle!

That problem is a classic on vac advance dizzy's because the points table keeps moving back and forth and breaks the wire. The originals had a much more of a multi core softer wire that lasted years.
That can't happen if you don't back off |

There is a solution, New baseplates for Lucas dizzys are available, which then enable you to fit a set of 'modern' Bosch points = availability and reliability, but not original. How would this stand with the Scruts.
Out of 5 seasons racing using the original Lucas set up we have had one DNF. with 3mins left of a 90min race the brass part of the rotor arm parted company. If you check out fleabay, original points are available I just brought a set for £2.95, in my opinion running points and being reliable is all part of proper preparation |
