Sorry, but he's a Brit. If they said "British wec champion, Anthony Davidson..." thatd be a great selling point. Did McNish's name not bring any clout to his countrymen?

I really don't think that be any bigger PR boost than "Andy Priaulx, WTCC world champion" was for Brands Hatch back in the day. World champion only matters (in this context) if the championship in question is widely recognized within common folks
In any case he's not A-"celeb" like Webber even if he had ten world championships on his belt, the three listed names sell better |

You severely underestimate how self-loathing we are!

Most motorsports enthusiasts should know who Anthony Davidson is. When I see Mark Webber's name, I think of the guy who came up short to Vettel 5 years in a row. Maybe theyre desperate for that F1 connection. Its a little sad imo, but Im not their PR guy

You'd have thought so; however, to illustrate that this might not always be the case, I did get to explain to someone at this year's Autosport show who Davidson and Allan McNish (who were opening that day's show). I found this a bit surprising given not only their recent and significant successes in sports cars; have raced in F1 and the fact that both drivers do a fair amount of F1 media work.

Stick in a pic of Davidson, a big union jack in the background and a large text bubble saying "World Champion" with a big arrow from the text bubble pointing at Davidson's head.

Fact is, this poster and press release isn't for the "motorsport enthusiast," it's for the F1/BTCC fans that have never heard of the WEC and to these people Webber, Dempsey & Hoy are far bigger eye-catchers than Davidson, Buemi & Nakajima (or Lotterer, Treluyer, Fassler, Duval, Lieb, Dumas, Hartley, etc.). Ditto the Vantage over a TS040, and again the 919 gets the nod because of who is driving it. You don't have to like it but from a bums on seats point of view it makes a certain amount of sense. |
