It will be the return of the glorious M1 supercar to do battle against the Ford GT and rear engine Corvette/Caddillic obviously.

I don't believe in the LMP1... not unless they lobby in the electric ruleset anyway, by the next decade

Good news, BMW still exploring Garage 56 and LMP1 Programs instead of rules out future LMP1 project.
http://sportscar365.com/lemans/wec/b...lmp1-programs/ Furthermore, the New Coupe based on 7 series platform (BMW 8 Series) is planning to build the M version for them!! http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/ne...ental-gt-sport |

As Acid said its not a matter of if they will return to LMP, just a matter of when.
I don't think it will be the M8, that car will not work at all against the Ford, Ferrari and Porsche. Still think it will be a all new clean sheet design supercar similar to the original M1 and maybe based off the i8 chassis. |

@GriffM3 That's right!!! The New Coupe based on 7 series platform does not make sense to used as the GTE car . Because M8 is far heavier then the GTE competitor like Ford , Ferrari and Porsche. But I hooped that they will used their brand new supercar or supercar based on i8 chassis to use as GTE car. But they majority used next generation of M6 as the GTE car. |

It's got to be a dedicated sports car if they are going to have any chance to compete.

whatever it is has got to be a 911/AMG GT/Audi R8 competitor.
It's a hole in there production line up and it would not make sense for them to make a big deal about a Le Mans debut and not tie it in to a new sportscar. |

Very much agree Articus. I truly believe it will be a competitor to the car above in design for sure. My guess is it will be a supercar M1 that will be resurrected to fill this void.

It WILL be an M8 derived car, the chassis is a system open for everything from 3-series up to the new 8-series. The M8, 840, 850, 860 were all trademarked recently. How they build the M8 exactly is adaptable but the engine seems like a turbo 8 is the leader with the V12 860 being their big boulevard car. Plus they have already been running the 8-series mules, hard to get a car built, tested, race-engineered, tested again and homologated if they aren't already running a chassis. |

I'll stick to my guns and say a new Z8 will be the GTE platform.

The question mark in the title of the article lends credibility.

It better be a super coupe and not some sedan based thing like a two-door 7 series

GT needs more of the big 2 doors.
They're the definition of Grand Tourers. |

It's a toss up. Sportscar racing or GT? The Ford GT has the GT name in it, but it's a sportscar or rather an exotic.

Details on BMW’s 2018 GTE-Pro effort are starting to become clearer. It’s understood that DTM squad MTEK is the leading candidate to operate the factory program, which is largely believed to utilize the new M8 platform. MTEK could exit DTM at the end of this year, as part of the series-wide reduction to six cars per manufacturer.
A decision on BMW’s tire partner has also yet to be confirmed. Dunlop’s Director of Operations, Jean-Félix Bazelin, told Endurance-Info that discussions are ongoing with the German manufacturer. Dunlop supported the German manufacturer’s last factory effort at Le Mans in 2010-2011 with the M3 GT. http://sportscar365.com/lemans/wec/s...ay-notebook-2/ |

I am cautiously wondering what the M8 is going to look like...hopefully it is a super coupe and not some huge boulevard cruiser like the M8 is right now.
I read another article where BMW tried to fit the V8 in the back of the i8 but it would not fit...maybe they need to modify the i8 further to get it to fit? Just a thought. |
