Weather described as wet track with drizzle on the last four laps.

Tyres being an issue:
TWR contracted to Avon: Jeff Allam running Avon slicks, Frank Sytner on Michelin intermediates!
Gordon Spice Racing contracted to Goodyear: Gordon Spice on grooved Goodyear slicks, Andy Rouse on Dunlop slicks. Decided with a toss of the coin, Rouse borrowing the Dunlop from Charles Sawyer-Hoare.

Class A:
Jeff Allam winning a start-to-finish victory with Vince Woodman initially giving chase before dropping to third with failing oil pressure. Rad Dougall, Gordon Spice and Andy Rouse fought over third in the early going with Rouse winning, before setting off for Woodman and an eventual second. Spice held the advantage in fourth, but on lap 9 Dougall got by on held on to fourth. Dennis Leech had had little driving in his new acquisition before the race and took it easy in sixth.

Class B:
Terry Nightingale qualifying almost 3 seconds in front of fellow Mazda RX-7 driver Gordon Bruce. Nightingale quickly lost his advantage as he had difficulty locating the windscreen wiper contact for the early race spray! Bruce retired soon with ignition fault while Hamish Irvine broke a rear tie-rod, leaving Jon Dooley in a very standard GTV6 in second. Late in the race he spun off at Becketts and was unable to get traction on the muddy grass and was stuck, feeling it might have saved him from a seized transmission. Mike Buckley finally inherited second in his Escort while James Burrows in what was described as his ”painfully slow Celica” was final finisher.

Class C:
Win Percy, who had considering retirement before the season, dominated class C through out the weekend winning convinsingly in the new Corolla. John Morris suffered from a misfire in the early laps leaving it to fellow VW man Tony Lanfranchi to try and keep up with Percy. As the race progressed Morris' misfire cured itself while Lanfranchi felt the effects of a recent engine damage during a pre-season test, deciding second in favour of Morris. Lanfranchi was even passed by the Fiesta of Jock Robertson, only for Robertson to retire on the last lap with engine failure.
The Martin Brundle Audi dropped a valve almost as soon as the car was unloaded sending the team packing up again, while Alan Greenhalgh delayed his BSCC debut by shunting his Golf during qualifying.

Class D:
Steve Soper dominated the first half of the Metro class but lost his clutch and had no chance against the tag-teaming Richard Longman and Alan Curnow. Curnow missed the Woodcote chikane and was docked 10 seconds but still held on to second in class. Neil McGrath finished fourth and his entrant Linden Racing protested the Longman and Soper cars for running a dry coil and damper rear suspension, while Curnow and McGrath run's a Hydragas system. Rob Kirby should have been a starter in this class, but the Napolina team simply ran out of time trying to prepare three cars for the event.

Certainly from your entry list they didn't start out like that! TW probably practiced the 19 car.

Is it possible that Jeff Allam ran the #1 car ? as I have these piccies showing the #1 car with Jeff's name on the roof.

These were taken in the Silverstone pit lane at the end of the '82 season during a Rover day for Auto Hebdo? magazine where Pierre Dieudonne(spelling ?)
drove the championship winning Rover cars for that season.

My brother Dave's Metro Challenge car (seen here on Avon tyres, which is another story in itself)
The Allam Rover
Rene Metge's? French Championship Rover
Richard Longmans Metro

It was a brilliant day, though cold and damp, with some puddles at the Stowe end of the circuit.

My brother was asked to drive the Allam car for the 'on circuit' photos, little knowing that in later years Richard Potter would buy that very car for him to drive in the '87 BTCC !!

David really enjoyed the experience, you could hear the cars breaking traction on the puddles on the slick shod cars from the other side of the circuit (open exhausts, lovely),The Sanyo car leading the French car out of woodcote onto the pit straight on full opposite lock, the TWR guy saying "There, I told you Dave would come round first"

Dave also drove the Longman Metro for a few quick laps, the Longman guys very impressed with him too.

I think the Nightingale car was listed for sale at more than one occasion during the season, so it might have been the same car. I'll look out for that.

It seems as if Jeff Allam did race #1 during 1982! Checked the pictures (it helps) from the round 1 report in Autosport.
That must have been quite a day. Your brother must be David Carwell then?

Bit more info about the big class cars.

The Gordon Spice cars were apparently brand new for the season after Spice and Rouse rejoined forces after Rouse's initial foray on his own in '81. Now, I think that whilst CC would likely have been responsible for building the cars, they were then run separately from Spice's Silverstone workshops managed by Keith Greene (something touched on in the CC Capri thread).

One of the Rouse cars continued though in Sawyer-Hoare's hands, also taking in the TT that September when Charles was partnered by John Brindley.

Woodman's car might also have been a new build, but could just as easily have been his 1981 mount, but with further development over the winter. Johnathan Buncombe used Vince's older spare car on occasions(also to be CC tended) but Esso obviously didn't stump up the budget for a full season, a real waste of Buncombe's ability as he was more than a match for the other Capri front runners in previous seasons.

The PMG/Martin Thomas cars started out in 1980, a second one being added in 1981 for Rex Greenslade after he had left the works equipe. Rex wasn't to be seen in 1982 however being replaced by South African F2 driver Rad Dougall....

The Dennis Leech car was Rex Greenslade's from 1981, (a car he would continue to run for another 4 or 5 years in Group A and the second car formerly pedalled by Muir in 1980/81 and Dougall in 82 became Charles Sawyer-Hoare's mount from 1983.)

From an interview during the '82 season he tells of his garage needing investment and attention around the time he won his '81 title and decided it was nice to stop at the top - and almost immediately regretted! During the off season he got three high profile offers without being specific, having an early verbal agreement with the Hughes of Beaconsfield team and finally signing for them. Percy was a Mazda dealer at the time he won the '82 title.

He later confirmed (he also mentions it on the '50 years of BTCC' DVD) that Walkinshaw wanted him to pilot one of the Sanyo cars for '82, but didn't come forward with a deal quickly enough so Win felt honour-bound to stay with the Hughes set up......

A correction to the class A limit: the class was 2501-3500 cc and not 3600 cc. The Rover SD1 threat has the details of how the V8 fitted, I believe.

End of season.

Regarding Mallory Park disappearing from the BSCC/BTCC post-1982. In late 1982 the track was for sale and Autosport even featured a sort of obituary - a history of the circuit with the future in doubt. Sources had it it was to close down, while other sources saw the group behind Brands Hatch was possible new owners.
Mallory Park did survive as races are still held on the circuit to this day, I believe, but for how long was negosiations going with the new owners before the circuit was in operation? Dropping spectator figures seems to have been a general problem for the circuit, but could the sale have inflicted on a possible 1983 BSCC date?

It doesn't really fit into the thread, but whilst clearing out some stuff recently, I came across the race winners Tricentrol cap that Vince Woodman gave to me when I was but a mere whippet of an enthusiastic 17yr pit marshal.

That's a thought- I'd forgotten that Mallory's future had been under threat at one point in the early 80's. Combine that with the need to run separate races for the classes because of Mallory's smaller maximum grid compared to somewhere like Silverstone or Donington, possibly Mallory was becoming a less-attractive option for the series. The arrival of Donington in 1977 (which got two BTCC rounds in it's first season I think, and continued to do so), barely 20 miles away by road might not have helped either...
