I wouldn't have thought he makes much 'profit'. He probably pays himself a fair whack, but wouldn't we all? I wouldn't think the prizemoney covers much, certainly not NNS prize money anyway. I think i heard somewhere that all things considered it costs between $40,000 and $50,000 per race in consumables and fees etc, not including chassis, engines etc. To be honest i don't know how he does it.

Be interesting to know how much it costs to run a cup car vs a nationwide car per race/season...

Well i kniw Joe has said that he could be reasonably competitive on $6m a year, thats half of a 'big' team.

Anyway, here are some usefull facts for Cup Series costs:

Cars cost $300,000 each (new) No used cars avail yet in Cup. Joe will have 4 or more by the end of the season.
Engines are $75,000 or more each race to lease. S & P teams might ust one for 2 races. Blow an engine and your done.
Tyres at $1500.00 a set, minimum 6 sets needed just to practice, qualify and race.
Entry fees are $4000,00 per event
Skeleton crew salary $5000.00 per event. Want a real pit crew? add another $5000.00.
Want a real spotter and not cousin Bob? add another $1000.
Hauler lease per year is $200,000. so thats $3500 an event.
Fuel at 4$ a gallon. lets see. North Carolina to Fontana CA is $4000.00 one way.
OOPs, wreck a car? 100 man hours plus parts. $50,000 to fix it or more.
Pay workers insurance, or their workers comp.
Facilities: A North Carolina rotten barn for $2000 a month or maybe something a bit nicer at $5000 a month.

All this for a 75,000 payout for that 35th place finish?

Joe Nemechek is probably skint!!

IIRC, he has additional help because he combined efforts with Jay Robinson, who still has money and likely equipment left over from his defunct team.

Does Joe run a successful business off track that funds his racing career?

The previous COT could have been re-skinned with Gen 6 bodywork. I'm sure most of the large teams built new cars.

From all this information, I guess he won't be S&Ping for awhile, something he's been notorious for on the Cup side. He remains a backmarker there, but his NNS effort is quite competitive.

Yes, i think his partnership with Robinson means he can run full time in Cup without S&Ping. His NNS effort does well against some better funded cars and teams. I think Joe is just one of those guys who would race his Granny to the shops. He just loves it. Plus having his own team may just provide a future for his son John who is in the K&N series and is quite promising so i hear.
