Hey you guys are forgeting another rule that has influenced how many laps a team will run before quails.
Its called the one engine rule. There is no incentive for teams to do 20 laps (old format) if they are going to junk an engine. Why would they push for pole if the engine is going to suffer and move them back 10 spots if it needs changing. At the momement most teams are going out doing set up and parking the cars before session 1.Think back to the AGPand MS's first practice. He did 2 flying laps.2nd session the same. The reason was they had to be sure the engine lasted for the weekend. Its not just the quailifying format that needs looking at but also the one engine rule.I'm not saying back to the old ways but allowing the teams to change an engine without penalty would spice it up a bit.I'm sure that if this was allowed you would see more drivers having a bigger go.At the moment all drivers have in the back of there minds the one engine rule when quailifying. One engine rule is fine by me.
I don't see it having caused any problems. Now, if only Ferrari would have a blow up in practice we might get an interesting grid! |

It ahsn't caused any problems yet, but under the old qualifying system it would limit the amount of laps teams do. One hour is far too long for qualifying, especially when it rained early in a session.
Actually,w et conditiosn are the only time I think a one-hour 12-lap session or similar should be used. Otehrwise, teh ruels are the same for everyone, and if someone starts at the back of the grid behidn a Minardi, it's because Mianrdi were faster in that qualifying session. If you don't want to start at the back, don't make a mistake. It works in Superbikes, but it's obviously too much like racing for some F1 fans. |

Good decision. Changing the format mid-season wouldn't be too smart...
However, I would like to see a new format for 2005. Sure, this format has thrown up the odd surprise, but I'd rather a 20 minute mad dash session. Now THAT would provide some excitement!!! |

I prefer one lap qualifying.
We see everyone's attempt. And it prevents the chance of accidents like that which killed Gilles Villeneuve. |

I've heard, that Paul Stoddard is man to blame - he was afraid, that the 107 % rule will come back again, of course slimming the possibility of Minardis to qualify on some of the races.

Paul Stoddard's not the man to blame - he's the man to thank.
