Clearly, driver in a new car, perhaps not to his liking, against a team mate who is actually very fast, quite possibly faster than him.....?

The first 2 incredible,the next 6 excellent and the last 2 filling out the 10.Russell would have got in except for his huge drop off after they announced the Mercedes drive.

[QUOTE=BTCC frog;4090467]Wow! We money.

Was Max Verstappen a worthy champion? ]

If you end up with more points than the next guy you are the champion - it really is as simple as that .'Worthiness ', 'deserved' , 'lucky ' doen't come into it . Once you start making subjective value judgments you end up down a worm hole of merit and demerit, of good and bad fortune which can erode the whole ethos of world championship .

Shoulda woulda couldas , favourite and least favourite drivers and teams all might make for lively debate but the essence of any championship is that he or she who ends up with the most points, or the most points after dropped scores , wins . And how could it be otherwise ? If we get into audience scoring we get into such emotionally driven nonsenses as the fact that the pensionable Raikkonen was voted driver of the day in Abu Dhabi . Go figure, because I'm b***d if I can !

I don't think that scoring the most points necessarily makes you the deserving champion. Would you have described Michael Schumacher as the deserving champion in 1997 if his move on Jacques Villeneuve had worked? I do consider Max Verstappen to be a worthy champion, for reasons I explain in that paragraph, but I think it is totally plausible for someone to win by luck and for their opponent to have deserved it more. And when I say 'by luck,' I of course don't mean a random fluke, I mean the driver/team who deserved it second-most ending up winning the championship because they had better luck than the driver who finished second. If the roles had been reversed in Abu Dhabi, with Hamilton winning the championship through that farcical ending, I would have said Verstappen was the deserving champion, and by extension Hamilton wasn't despite the fact that he was incredibly impressive in 2021, because Hamilton just had far better luck over the whole season, even if the final race was the exact opposite.

I'm not saying that drivers deserve to have their championships taken away because they won them through luck, but I think it is fair to say that another driver could have deserved it more. But that did not happen in this case. And I will also say that favourite drivers should be totally irrelevant in this case; the debate over who was the deserving champion should have nothing to do with favourites. And the f1.com driver of the day vote is just a popularity contest anyway.

By the way, this is the results to the F1 2021 fans' ranking which I counted up from 77 rankings.

I simply wouldn't qualify the status of world champion in any way . It is a pure matter of fact, and separate from and different to one's own opinion about a driver.

Interesting stuff (and, as you know, I do agree with Sainz being rated above Leclerc and fully expect that to be the case at the end of the next season too.... ).

Sainz is my dark horse pick to win the title next year!

i also have Perez over Bottas. sure Merc won the constructors and thats because the points Bottas brought, but i feel as though Perez did more to help his team mate win and more to alter Merc's/Ham's strategy then the other way around.

perhaps more credit goes to the team for using Perez in this fashion but Perez played rear gunner brilliantly imo.

i think this is a case where you can judge something outside of the tradition points structure.

Indeed, agree totally and certainly I recall Perez, in a points position late in the race being stopped for soft rubber, thus sacrificing team points, solely to go out and secure the FL thus ensuring Lewis was unable to take just one FL point in addition to his position tally. Perez with the stop dropping him out of the points was unable to be credited with the FL point anyway so the objective was to take just one point from Lewis.

With both drivers going into the last race tied that every single point taken from Lewis earlier in the season paid off.
