In the Planetf1 article by Mike Lawrence it says that John Watson's name was once written as "John What's wrong?" on the side of his car.

In answer to Tim's questions, i don't think anyone has yet got that "Little Leaf" is Stefan Johansson (should really be Little Leif) but I'm stumped on "Chunky", though I feel I know it.
And the modern nickname I really liked on here was Marzipan, just cracked me up - I think Minardi Fan was the originator. Last edited by Marshal; 8 May 2001 at 15:55. |

Good job, robert2000, djb and Wolf!
Wolf, you're shooting in the non-english section already. English 1 - The Pampas Bull = Froilan Gonzales 2 - The Booming Bulldog 3 - The Abruzzi robber 4 - The Great Little Man = Tazio Nuvolari 5 - The Smiley Dane 6 - The Matchstick 7 - The Chronometer = Leon Thery 8 - The Sorcerer 9 - The Bike = Mike Hailwood 10- Mad Ronald 11- Big John = John Surtees 12- Bandy Legs = Juan-Manuel Fangio 13- Lionheart = Nigel Mansell 14- Superswede = Ronnie Peterson 15- Jumper = Jean-Pierre Jarier 16- Hawkeye At Wolf's request also the non-english section, of which he foresaw a few already. Coeur de Lion is indeed Raymond Sommer. The english Lionheart was a nickname for Nige, wasn't it? The Great Little Man is The Flying Mantovan, Il Mantovani Volante, which is Tazio Nuvolari indeed. And last but not least El Chueco is Fangio. So here goes for non-english nicknames: French 17- Le Professeur 18- Le Petoulet 19- Le Vieux Renard 20- Coeur de Lion = Raymond Sommer 21- Jeannot German 22- Der Karatsch 23- Der Pechvogel 24- Der Regenmeister 25- Die Schildkröte 26- Der Nebelmeister Italian 27- Il Mantovani Volante = Tazio Nuvolari 28- Il Negher 29- Il Pirata 30- Ciccio Spanish 31- El Chueco = Juan-Manuel Fangio Otherwise 32- 13 Good luck! |

"Le Professeur" is definitely Alain Prost. "Jeannot" is Jean Alesi.

19- Le Vieux Renard The Old Fox, Was that Louis Chiron?
24- Der Regenmeister -I had heard it first used to describe Jacky Ickx, or rather the Gernglish variant, "Rainmeister" |

The reason I chose the spelling "Leaf" for Stefan Johansson is that I think he actually enjoyed the play on words and incorporated a leaf in the design on his helmet.
Vieux Renard - I would have given that to Piero Taruffi, although perhaps he was Le Renard Argent? Regenmeister for me is Rudolf Caracciola, but then again perhaps that's "Der Karatsch". Peschvogel. I know this... ...I know this.... ....err.... ....blast! |

Here's my go at the 'nicknames competition':
French 17- Le Professeur = Alain Prost 19- Le Vieux Renard = Luis Chiron (MC) 20- Coeur de Lion = Raymond Sommer German 22- Der Karatsch = R. Carraciola ? 23- Der Pechvogel = Manfred von Brauchitch 24- Der Regenmeister = Rudolf Carraciola (CH) 25- Die Schildkröte = Tazio? (he had a turtle as a logo) 26- Der Nebelmeister = Bernd Rosemeyer Bonus: Der Bergmeister = Hans Stuck Italian 27- Il Mantovani Volante = Tazio Nuvolari 30- Ciccio = Alberto Ascari (I) |

Re: Nicknames for all current F1 Drivers
At the Williams launch this year I asked Juan Montoya if he would take offense to being called 'The Full Monty' and he just laughed. :-)

Jody Scheckter was known as 'Sideways Scheckter'. Here is a good example why.

What you all forgot is the italian nickname for Jean Alesi which I made my own nick in here: Jeanburrasca. Jean is clear, burrasca means stormwind in italian.

Chapeau bas, gentlemen!
The German section faultlessly completed by TimD and Wolf and adding two bonusses along the way in the form of 'Bergmeister' Hans Stuck and 'Grey Fox' or 'Le Renard Argent' Pierro Taruffi. One miss, Wolf. 'Ciccio' is not Ascari. R is right about the French Professor, but 'Jeannot' is not the same as 'Jeanburrasca', which is a great nick btw, I didn't know that. Another bonus-entry. Thus solved so far: English 1 - The Pampas Bull = Froilan Gonzales 4 - The Great Little Man = Tazio Nuvolari 7 - The Chronometer = Leon Thery 9 - The Bike = Mike Hailwood 11- Big John = John Surtees 12- Bandy Legs = Juan-Manuel Fangio 13- Lionheart = Nigel Mansell 14- Superswede = Ronnie Peterson 15- Jumper = Jean-Pierre Jarier French 17- Le Professeur = Alain Prost 19- Le Vieux Renard = Louis Chiron 20- Coeur de Lion = Raymond Sommer Bonus by TimD: Le Renard Argent = Piero Taruffi German 22- Der Karatsch = Rudolf Caracciola 23- Der Pechvogel = Manfred von Brauchitsch 24- Der Regenmeister = Rudolf Caracciola 25- Die Schildkröte = Tazio Nuvolari 26- Der Nebelmeister = Bernd Rosemeyer Bonus by Wolf: Der Bergmeister = Hans Stuck Italian 27- Il Mantovani Volante = Tazio Nuvolari Bonus by Juanburrasca: Juanburrasca = Jean Alesi Spanish 31- El Chueco = Juan-Manuel Fangio And still to go: English 2 - The Booming Bulldog 3 - The Abruzzi robber 5 - The Smiley Dane 6 - The Matchstick 8 - The Sorcerer 10- Mad Ronald 16- Hawkeye French 18- Le Petoulet 21- Jeannot Italian 28- Il Negher 29- Il Pirata 30- Ciccio Otherwise 32- 13 These are pretty though, so keep your associations coming .. |

Other than Senninha, which I don't think was Ayrton's nickname, was a nick name ever given to him by anyone ?
As much as I admired his talent, I just can't seem to recall him being called anything else other than Ayrton or Senna, and not counting the names he may have been called by other drivers that he beat under their helmets ? |

Fan
Le Petoulet (the rat dropping) is Maurice Trintignant. Could Il Negher be Nuvulari, because of his swarthy complexion?

Georgio, what about 'Magic' and 'The right foor of God' and probably some more.
Tres cool Marshall and Roy2! Only Il Negher is not Nuvolari, the rest is spot on: 10- Mad Ronald = Ronnie Peterson (nick not by Williams, but by Mike Hailwood ) 18- Le Petoulet = Maurice Trintingant 21- Jeannot = Jean Behra Still 10 to go: English 2 - The Booming Bulldog 3 - The Abruzzi robber 5 - The Smiley Dane 6 - The Matchstick 8 - The Sorcerer 16- Hawkeye Italian 28- Il Negher 29- Il Pirata 30- Ciccio Otherwise 32- 13 |

Aha! Reading up on something else entirely, I find that the "Abruzzi Robber" was Luigi Fagioli.
Heaven only knows why.... |

Found another one - Il Negher, Giuseppe Campari.
I wonder... does that nickname mean what I think it means? Dodgy ground, I think... |
