So the FIA have managed to kill their own GT2 series, despite significant, international, manufactuer support for this class of racing.
Looks like Euro GT is now the premier European GT series. |

Hmm, yet the big 4 wanted this to be 'The' FIA GT class and have pro drivers. It is in the shadow of Ratel's top class and no pro pairings. So do we suppose that has anything to do with the, so far, apparent low/non entry levels? I.E. Non mfg. support of those teams?

Im leaning towards SRO wanting to kill off FIA GT2 so that there would be more emphasis on the new GT1 world championship, they didnt help GT2 with the stupid driver classifications, no wonder there hasnt been a lot heard about entries for GT2 this year and Euro GT and LMS will benefit, they already have.

Sad. A championship that was quite good last year is now screwed. I hope all the guys in those cars last year can find their way to LMS and GT Open. Ratel's stupidity is everyone else's gain!

I have a hard time with this being on purpose from the Rat. And surely FIA does not want it to go away.

Zolder semms to me a bit small for GT2-class 24-hour races.

Actually it's pretty awesome and they even had a bunch of GT1 cars a few years ago.

I think GT2 is on a slippery slope in all championships because of costs and some GT3 cars are now quicker so whats the point

Could we see FIA GT2 and GT3 classes race together?

Right now I think the speed differential would be too small. That doesn't make it impossible per se, but it's rather pointless to have two classes that do similar lap times.

Oh dear.
What a shame. They'll just have to run the Spa 24 to the same rules as the Nring 24 |

I can't see what the big deal is if FIA GT2 disappears. We've got GT open and Le Mans series - having one more pan European series is just too many championships chasing too few cars. Besides, having GT1 and GT2 replaced by a full grid of new GT1s is hardly bad news...

The fact that it isnt looking good doesnt really bother me (FIA) cuz as you say there is enough GT2 alternatives ..... what bothers me is why it was so ****ed up by Ratel , that it is disapearing !!!

It really is time we had an official statement on the now dead GT2 European Championship, it does not even appear as a link on the FIA GT website so it must be dead

Since Le Mans, GT Open and other series prefer GT2 over GT1, it would have been better if SRO's new World Championship was created with GT2 cars instead of GT1. This way, the development of cars is diluted among many classes, and that's bad news to me.

It would have been great if there actually were many NEW GT1's. Unfortunately, with the exception of Nissan, there are none from the manufacturers. They voted to go to GT2, and Ratel in his stubborn ways chose to ignore them.

Voted to go GT2? How many new gt2s are there beside the BMW? New GT1s include the Lamborghini, Ford Gt and Nissan. Personally I don't mind grandfathered Astons , Masers and Corvettes. All cars look great, have fantastic sounding engines and will not be noticeably slower than before. The big issue is with GT2s. Hardly any faster than gt3s and much more expensive. This category won't survive for long...

Corvette/GM racing Voted to go to GT2. They built a NEW GT2.
Jaguar/RJR voted to go to GT2. They built a NEW GT2. That looks like three to me, plus what is coming. Panoz is apparently building a new model, Ferrari will have a new GT2 for 2011, and another manufacturer is considering participation as well starting for 2011. Meanwhile, GT1 has just the one. Sure, ok, the Ford GT, not a manufacturer backed car, in a car that is out of production, and the Lambo I believe isn't supported either. I just can't take those two seriously. The grandfathered cars are there out of necessity, as they wouldn't have had a sufficient grid without them, as there wasn't the interest. The bottom line is that Ratel's GT1 has no real support. |
