I'm hoping there might be 4 teams fighting for the championship next year but I'm also hoping Anna Kanithroalegova will knock on the front door.......................................

Every designer has his "bad" cars, but I would dare say that Newey is more consistent than the others. |

Ah yes, but imagine if all the cars on the grid were stripped of their paint. The McLaren would win on appearances!! Truly spectacular looking car. Granted it may be a bit of a "knife edge" performer, but nevertheless it looks the business!!

The problem with stripping the paint off is that F1 cars all look VERY similar these days and are lacking variety. The only differences this year that were clearly visible were the different noses and in the end Bennetton just copied Ferrari's design.

Rory Byrne is clearly a great designer, but I think in modern times (90s onwards) that Newey has it.
The Williams in 1991 was the best car after it had sorted out it's early season reliability problems (maybe this could be Newey's weakness?). '92 and '93 he had clearly the best cars. I consider the '94 Williams a bit poor (relatively), but by the end of the year and also into 1995 I think the Williams was back on top. Although not enough to match the threat of Schumacher. The 1996 and '97 Williams were clearly better than the opposition. Then of course the switch to McLaren led to the '98 and '99 car being the class of the field. 2000 I would call a draw between Ferrari and McLaren, but this year it was down to second best (just ahead of the Williams). That's not a bad strike rate. Many of these years came when his car had a great engine, but the success can not be fully contributed to this fact. Newey is envolved in the overall design package and I think that some of the change enphasis of engine design is down to him. For example the increase in the importance of overall wieght and weight distribution as opposed to just caring about power. Obviously the performance of a car is not just down to one man (especially nowadays) or even just one component (engine, tyres, etc...), but to have Newey as part of your (very big) team is in my opinion a great plus. To dismiss his achievements is doing him a great misjustice. |
