Looking at the sidepods it's an old spec 908 isn't it? Doesn't have the hump in front of the rear arches.

Yes, it's an older car. That's why it's labeled simply as a "Demonstrator", as it's not the final car.

Peugeot says 3-5% gain in fuel economy without added performance, or extra performance and no gain in fuel economy. So most likely they will just use it for extra performance only.

Just for comparison, a 5% gain on a 40 l/100 km (more or less the mileage of Audi at Lemans), that's an economy of only 2 liters of fuel. That just doesn't sound much at all!

But how many km do they do at Le Mans?

Well, in a 5000 km race, that's an economy of 100 liters. Roughly, a pit-stop plus a splash and dash, or something like 1m30 in a 24 hour race.

And given the cut and thrust nature of endurance racing these days that's a ton! Recall Audi's DI R8 engine gave them a 8% increase in fuel consumption and they put that to good use in 2001.

Let me rephrase my concerns (damn internet )

As you quite rightly state, the DI engine on the back of the R8 gave them an 8% saving in fuel. Yet, the hybrids are only meant to save you 5% in fuel. In retrospect, I find it lackluster!

Then again, my expectations are maybe set too high

I was there and didn't even see this thing, was it on display?

They wouldn't have taken the cover off of it anyway so I guess you could just be staring at another 908 from the outside.

It was by the scrutineering area inside Copse, they did take the cover off for a few mins while i was sat on the outside of copse and i could see it.

Quick snap with my phone, ive circled the 908 HY in red.

It is? Looks pretty similar to me. Sure, it doesn't have the lower diveplane on it, but it's not surprising that they did not really set it up for Silverstone. Beyond that, looks like a pretty stock 2007/early 2008 908 to me, with the exception of the roof details Jake pointed out. Old-style sidepods and all the rest, but that's it as far as I can tell.

The roof must be aero, not packaging.

Surely they wouldn't jam all the stuff up there?

I would assume that there is something that goes atop the front of the engine as part of the hybrid system that required a slight bulge. It just seems odd for them to preview a new roof on an otherwise old chassis and not on an active racecar if it provided an aerodynamic advantage. There is little logic there. We know that the batteries are in the floor in the centre and left of the car, but there are going to be engine-related components as well.

I originally thought that the car was running a higher level of cooling, specifically for the water cooler. I realized, however, that the 908s ran with restricted cooling during the damp Friday and Saturday sessions, but moved to full radiator slats like the 908HY on Sunday in what I believe were warmer temperatures.

I can't see any changes to the roof, or to any other parts of the bodywork. That 'crease', and the two bulges behind the cockpit, are on the current 908. I doubt any of the new bits and pieces would require more space underneath that part of the rear bodywork - it looks there is plenty of space under there already, the engine is mounted very low.

The "gurney bubble" on the 908's roof has been there since the begining, you can see the lowered area here shot at Sebring:

To be honest I did think that the roof was the same, but I figured Jake had seen it in person and didn't want to call him out un-necessarily. So I think that we can safely say that externally, this is a stock early-08 908.

Any idea when they will firm up what car will run where?

Will they run 2 normal & 1 hybrid or put all their eggs in one basket?
