The not so bright or couldn't give a continental Tasmanian government of the day and the scenic preservation board caused the demise of the Longford Circuit. Now wouldn't that be a fantastic circuit to see the V8's on!

In the speedway tracks in the last 25 years we have lost:

1. The mighty Penguin Superbowl due to the local council not approving a toilet block,

2. Harveydale at Westbury basically for TQ500's and solos and sidecars,

3. Richmond Speedway .

I suppose in the 60's and 70's most country towns would have had a speedway track.

Was Granville Showgrounds a speedway track at one stage?

If anyone picks up Channel Seven presents Evan Green's World of Motorsport 1977, it's got really good info on most of the tracks around in the 70's

Amazing what has been lost.
There is a thread on the Atlas nostalgia forum dealing with lost Australian speedways

You are right Razor, that indeed is a good book. I picked up my copy for $2 in an antique shop in Katoomba last year..... after the obligatory lap of Catalina Park of course

Calder might just surprise you. Remember the urban creep has gotten as close as it can as the land around Calder Park that hasn't got houses on it is owned by a bloke named Bob Jane or the power company and is zoned industrial so they cant build houses anyway, plus theproposed 2nd east/west runway at Melbourne airport restricts development in that part of the word (I live locally so have a fair idea of the ins & outs around there).

Calder actually has the least restrictive noise restrictions of all the Victorian tracks dating back to the Thunderdome & Drag Nationals era.

Also visited the sight of the old Leyburn track when further north (in Qld). Surprisingly you can still the old track layout on Google Earth but there is not much left to see on the gound - some gaps through the trees etc

as a ex vic I agree PVDA, Bob was a smart cookie back then, brought the land around him and secured a nice motorsport precinct. Pity other track owners and promoters didn't think the same. We would still have some nice tracks. Does anyone remeber Warick Farm?

What year did Amaroo Park close?

What year did Liverpool Speedway close and was the track still ashpalt, or reverted to dirt/clay?

What year did Bagot Park speedway close, and was called Bagot Park or was called Northline Speedway? The reason was I worked in Darwin in the late 80's and Imparja TV had adds for Northline and Aurunga Speedway.

One for the trivia buffs to bore their mates with down at the pub, both King and Flinders Island in Bass Strait had speedway tracks in the late 1970's and used run Sunday afternoon meetings during summer time

Mid-late 1998 was the last race meeting at Amaroo, a clubbie from memory. The final event was scheduled to be the last round of the 1998 Super Touring Championship, but it got changed to Oran Park for a reason that escapes me at the moment.

Liverpool Speedway must have closed circa-1983, could have been converted back to dirt by then (or am i thinking Canberra?)

Bagot Park speedway was the one that closed, it used to be at the corner of McMillans Rd and Bagot Rd and closed late 70's early 80's as far as I know. Northline Speedway is the name of the speedway next to Hidden Valley raceway. If you watch the V8 supercar telecast, when the cars go around turn 1, if you were to throw a bottle over the fence there you would probably hit some yobo in the pits at Northline Speedway. Have a look at Google maps satellite view or Google earth to see where it is. Oh, it is still well and truelly open, just ask sizzle...

Why would you want to do that? And why do you assume that the yobbos are at the speedway?

Corrected, it was 1998 for the "goodbye" race meeting. I remember this now as we didn't get the racecar rebuilt in time for it. Dad's name is still on the Natsoft records for the meet as a DNS

Liverpool was converted back to dirt and closed, according to Wikipedia, in 1989.

I once heard that they are going to construct a new race track near the Oran Park lands and will be a similar circut to the Oran Park Raceway. Has anyone got any new info?

No way they'd build it near where Oran Park is- It'd just get torn down for houses in a few years. There was a rumour of somewhere in the Southern Highlands but at this stage it's almost definately not happening.
