Ferrari wouldn't release their telemetry (to ITV) but i remember Martin Brundle doing an "overlay" on the grid of Villeneuve and Frentzens qualifying lap where they set the same time, totally different graphs, but same result time wise. Would have been very interesting to see Michaels lap "overlayed" via telemetry too.

Iirc, ITV also showed Villeneuve and Schumachers laps split screen so we could see the difference in their laps, very interesting stuff.

Andrew, agreed on the stoppages - I was simply trying to illustrate that the severity of the injury doesn't necessarily mean a racestop.

As for FIA, in what way is their behaviour different from any other level of motorsport? Even at club level, COCs will constantly question requests for a red flag, and on some cases deny them. This is endemic to motorsport generally and to be honest, it's mainly caused by complacency. Circuits/racing classes/organisers that have not been touched for a long time with tragedy tend to start thinking they're invincible.

I'm sure someone can tell me the exact length of time, but as far as I recall there hasn't been a driver fatality in F1 in the last 10 years?

The kind of crashes that drivers are surviving now - with few ill effects - are ones that would have killed them 10,15,20 years ago. Look at Ralf's crash. If that had happened in the 80s, it could quite probably have ended in a fireball and severe injury, even death.

People get lulled into a false sense of security - believing that all the money that is spent on safety equipment will be enough to prevent bad things from happening. That means that when they're concerned about scheduling, safety may not always be the first thing on their minds - not because they don't care but because they earnestly believe that they are safe and bad things can't happen.
