glyn parham should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
There are still a few who don't quite make it, but they area as follows
Tom Walkinshaw
Pierre Dieudonne
Tony Lanfranchi
James Weaver
Jochen Mass
Eddy Joossens
Dave Matthews
Dave Brodie
Roy Pierpoint
Klaus Ludwig

Nothing controversial, but still no room for Jack Sears (sorry Andrew) or Martin Brundle (who was mighty in the TWR Jaguars), Armin Hahne, Cecotto, Grice, Patrick Watts and even Peter Baldwin.

No particular order
Soper
Rouse
Percy
Marshall
Clark
Tarquini
Winkelhock
Will Hoy
Keith Odor (Awesome in the Skyline)
Sir John Whitmore (I did wonder if he would get a mention).
And lastly love him or hate him, Frank Sytner. I actually saw him smile once. Goodwood 1998 when his Jag broke down!

Top Drivers

Top Ten Touring car drivers need to consist of the consistent top drivers... Not one season wonders!

So in no particular order the first top drivers to enter my head (maybe updated u c) are..

1) Hans Stuck
2) Bernd Schneider
3) Klaus Ludwig
4) Alain Menu
5) Laurant Aiello
6) Roberto Ravaglia
7) Frank Biela
8) Yvan Muller
9) Mark Skaife
10) Paul Radisich

To be good enough for the list a driver must have the skill and ability to do good with an average car. In other words, be able to drive around a cars problems. Andy Rouse is a great touring car name, but had his doors blown of by Radisich. Mark Skaife has been around a long time and is still a winner. While Alain Menu and Ivan Muller have some of the best car control which keeps em in there! If anyone chucks in Mike Smith or James Thompson, shoot em!

As this is a historic forum, should people still racing be excluded?

You could exclude people who are still racing, but Gerry Marshall, Andy Rouse, Fearless Frank Sytner and a few other of the "older" breed of saloon car driver, are still racing. and they are important parts of saloon car racing history aren't they?

I don't think you can exclude someone just because they're still racing- in fact, in some cases like Gerry Marshall, the very fact that they're still out there after so many years is a big part of their claim to greatness- you can't argue with 600+ wins.....

But this is a thread about drivers of touring cars - isn't Brock's Monaro a touring car?

Hard to go past moffman's list - except I'd replace Glenn Seton with Mark Skaife. Showing a 100% Australian bias, but Australia is where the World's best touring car racing comes from.

Ivan Muller

Hi Guys,

I quote

"Oh my God! Yvan Muller must be the best ever.... He's just won the British Championship!! WOW! He's just the greatest... - NOT......."

by Sofa King Smart.

What a load of old ****! Ivan Muller isn't the best ever, BUT he's dam good. This year he has shown what makes a good touring car driver.. Consistency and a controversial incident. Either way he has outstanding car control as proven with his numerous Ice racing championships and this year put together some pretty good drives. Lets face it he won the championship and nobody else lost the championship, they were just beaten by someone who did the job better than them!

Regards.

The Aussie content here is rather high.
My list:
Jim Clark
Sir John Whitmore
Klaus Ludwig
Hans Stuck
Toine Hezemans
Steve Soper
Bernd Schneider
Will Hoy
Gerry Marshall
Peter Brock (although I can't really judge him well)

and very close:
Whizzo
John Handley (never saw a Cooper that sideways)
Dieter Quester
Win Percy

and Fearfull Frank (Sytner) is just too aggressive to be in the 10 best.

My Top Ten in STRICT order are:

1. Frank Gardner
2. Jim Clark
3. Peter Brock
4. Brian Muir
5. Gerry Marshall
6. Dieter Quester
7. Andy Rouse
8. Steve Soper
9. John Clelland
10. Alain Menu

Not only was Big Frank the best he was also the wittiest. My favourite comment came in a post race interview at Brands. The race - supporting event for the 1970 Race of Champions - was divided into two heats. In the first Gardner suffereed a shock absorber failure under braking for Druids. However the choice comment came after the second heat. The commentator was most interested to see if more problems had beset the Mustang. Gardner thought for a moment they said 'Gee yes! About three laps in the blooming radio packed up!'.

I really can't take any of these lists seriously if they don't have Win Percy, Martin Brundle, or Tom Walkinshaw near the top.

Jackie Ickx used come to Australia & co drive with Allan Moffat At Bathurst - did he drive tourers in Europe (he hasnt been mentioned in this thread).
I saw Gerhad Berger give the Bob Jane Schnitzer BMW 635 a fair caning in Adelaide - most impressed - did he drive tourers often?

I would tend to agree with your view about Percy and Walkinshaw, but did Brundle do enough Touring car racing to warrant inclusion in this particular list? I hasten to add that I am a huge fan of Brundle and reckon him one of the best sportscar drivers and, after Amon, the unluckiest F1 drivers of all time.

Incidentally, was this thread resurrected following MotorSports highly contentious Top 20 Tin-Top Superstars list in their February issue? The March issue, which I received today, publishes three letters, not surprisingly challenging their list.
