The same thing happened at the 1992 Bathurst 1000.

Asa should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Macau needs proper cranes that can haul stricken cars off the track as soon as the driver is out of the car, all around the circuit, just like Monaco. They can't rely on flat bed trucks to remove cars.

Every time something happens on track, safety car. Oh someone crashed, red flag. That's no way to organize a race meeting.

I agree the car that crashed and caused the red flag should be DQed.

But to use timing loops for the result at the time of the accident is very difficult. You still have over 10 cars or so behind who have not crossed the timing loop when the red flag is already shown.

As soon as the red flag is shown the field is supposed to slow down. You cannot declare a fair result with the front half racing across the "line" and the rest slowing down thinking the race is suspended when they cross the "line".

Red flag the race. The finishing order could be how the cars enter the pit lane?

Of course, red flags are easy to deal with but this race had the added complication of a time curfew.

The general rule in FIA races is when a race is red flagged, the running order of the cars is reset to whatever order they were as they crossed the start/finish line on the previous lap. This is nothing new.

You can't just "DQ" the person who caused the red flag. Not all red flags finish a race, normally they get restarted. Also, what if the person had been hit/taken out by another car that continued? Or if 3 cars were involved in a crash and some of them continued? You're just going to DQ the one that was immobile?

I don't think anyone liked the race itself or the way it finished, but that's the rules.

In the 2011 Indy 500, race leader Hildebrand crashed, Wheldon passed him to take first place, and Hildebrand dragged to finish second. Those were the final results.

That seems fair enough to me.

If the track is blocked, it's another story.

Back in 1996 Macau Grand Prix, Ralph Firman Jr led, then damaged his car. Jarno Trulli passed him and went on to take the chequered flag, but Ralph Firman Jr crashed his car and blocked the track. The race officials called a red flag, thus the result counted back to the previous lap when Ralph Firman Jr was leading the race. Many people called Ralph Firman Jr a cheat.

In that case, Firman could have been excluded for intentional crashing, I guess.

But his car was damaged and you cannot conclusively say he did it intentionally...
