Personally, any american v-8 with a good exhaust. I have a 350ci v-8 with a flowmaster exhaust with dual two chamber delta flow mufflers, easy on the ears going down the road, roars when you stamp on the gas. Robert

Hmmm...any Ducati

The Ferrari 360 makes a wonderful wail, even trundling along in traffic.
Ford BA Falcon GT
Ferrari F40 flat out as it passes by at 200 and whatever it was - sounded more like an aircraft.
Volvo's 5 cylinder engines sound very nice too.

There's more but that will do for now.

I'd agree that the Sunbird does sound nice, but only after fitting some non-genuine parts - namely strategically placed C4 explosive and detonator caps, KABOOM

The best cars I've heard were both at the same vintage meet: a 1970 Trans-Am Mustang race car, and a Cam Am race car that THUNDERED up the Andretti Straight at Mosport.
I only wish I could remember who built it..
It made my hair stand up !

I was once lucky enough to see a Lambourghini Diablo in my home town, and as i stood open mouthed the driver gave it a quick rev and shot away!

Flowmasters .... again and again but it might be the key. The 454 in my homely old chev pickup makes sweets sounds from idle to 5k (don't have the nerve to rev a 30 year old motor any higher). On overrun it makes a sound that makes you think it's laughing. I'm either nuts or a just hooked on gas.

I've not heard it of course but I bet the Bugatti Veyron sounds a bit tasty with 16 cylinders, 4 blowers, 10001 bhp,921lb of tourque, a topspeed of 250mph and 0-186 in 14.0 seconds, but then again with a price tag of 750 big ones it bloody well needs to.

For a car it has to be the burble of a tweaked scooby for me...
And the noise a 998 produces when having its neck wrung.....
Some of the big Detroit Diesels sound pretty special as well....

ANY Cruciform cranked V8, although GM/Chevrolet small blocks just seem to have the 'edge' over the competition for that bass rumble.

Also partial to the banshee wail of a 'Works-spec' MG Metro 6R4, the throb of a Subaru Impreza and also the wastegate chatter of the Ford Sierra/Escort Cosworths.

hye

no one has said ne thing anout the rotary engine. ive got a 12a roary ( the smaller of the common) and its turbo charged so it doesnt too mosquito like and its quite nice to listen, especially cos its very loud. but i spose it also has the induction noise from the huge to turbo to help it
but other than that have to agree with the 360 modena, and the mclaren f1, and ow how i love the burble of the boxer in the subarus

Related to this, I was downtown for work the other night, and had parked in a underground garage. Upon leaving, I fired up the beast and no less than a half dozen car alarms went off around me , so while I was waiting for it to warm up, I would sit and wait for the alarms to stop, then whack the throttle again to re set them all off. The double bonus was that the garage was fairly empty on the closer to the surface floors (the people that park there are all daily parking commuters) and the concrete surface was polished, so I proceeded to flat track my way out of the garage, leaving huge black stripes at the corners, and setting off more car alarms the whole way out. Ahhh, cheap entertainment Robert

I can relate to noise boy's tale - I brought the Alfa in to work one Saturday, and 'cause its not a work day, I could park under the building. When it came time to leave, I had some difficulty getting it up the ramps to get out of the basement car park (its set up for racing so is a bit cammy under 3 thou).

After struggling up the first ramp (clutch slip city!), I decided to use a bit more gas up the other ones to get the engine into its power band - but I didn't account for the low coefficient of friction of the concrete floor (or the noise that it created - a high pitched squeal combined with a screaming open trumpetted/exhausted twin cam ).

It also left two long black lines up the second ramp (and the third) - good to know that the LSD was working well though. I don't know if any car alarms were set off (fortunately it was virtually deserted), anyway I didn't want to hang around to find out. I imagine that security have a good video of it all though

Metro 6R4
BDA Escorts
Rover V8 (fully sorted and revving like hell)
Vauxhall XE on Webers
older STi Subaru's
All Aston MArtins

Cant be doing with those castrated cat type whining noise that most ferrari's seem to make

Audi 5 cilinders (Turbo's)
Ford Cosworth (Turbo's)
Ford RS200 Evo
BMW E30 M3
BMW E46 M3 CSL (almost like 6R4 on silencers)
Vauxhall / Opel 2.0 16V

I prefer a throttle body intake note or a turbo whine or ALS over exhaust noise anytime!

Oh lately I heard a Porsche GT through the traffic... Very nice silenced but a nice howl. I like the 10 cilinder sound, as the Gallardo sounds about the same. And basicly I don't like supercars...

Oh and those Jap bikes! Nice...

noise, one of my favorite things in a car however though without sounding like an old fart, many modern cars soundwise dont do it for me anymore, they sound too fake and castrated, get some straight pipes on those supercars!!!

but best sounding road cars

TVR griffith 500, absolutely glorious sound
aston martin vantage, the big 2 ton beast not the new baby-aston
lamborghini diablo SE30, yum yum
BRM V16, now that is a noise that is.....well unmatched
porsche carrera GT on straight pipes, sounds bloody wild
BMW M3 CSL, ok its modern but it makes a fabulous noise at full chat
AC cobra, thunder, the sound of thunder
maserati MC12 corsa, not road legal but praise the lord it makes a great noise
ferrari 250LM, oooooohhhhh
alfa romeo GTV6, very very veryyyyy nice sound
audi sport quattro, not the rally version but a nice woofly noise
metro 6R4, i still cant help but smile when i hear one.

A women in a bar asking me what my three favoite pieces of music were?
I said, "Do you really want to know?" she said "YES"

OK

1. Sound of a Small block Chevy cranking over - She rolled her eyes
2. Sound of a BIG BLOCK chevy cranking over - She stood up
3. a V12 F1 Ferrari scream at 18,000 rpms - She walked away

I said, " What? You asked . . . ??"

Some ppl just dont appreciate good music.

Here is a Corvette C5R taking a lap at Le Sarth -- Ohhh Music to my ears
