Not many people know that

Lancs. There was snow on the ground and the speed looked quite awesome, having seen the V16 in period many times I was very impressed by the video, but then Stirling was beyond mortal. Never being 'in to' rallying, I consider their skill equal to any circuit racer, and having had a couple of passenger rides with some pretty big names on Media days, I know I would not care to try it myself.

I ached for days afterwards.

Sorry Baub, but I don't think this is actually Stirling driving the car in 1953, the road signs are much too modern for that...

Stirling, apart from being an awesome driver of all types of cars, was also a true gentleman and a very unassuming chap. I and some friends came to his assistance at Crystal Palace in the mid 60s, and he repaid our actions by inviting us to join him at a future date at the Steering Wheel Club which was within very easy walking distance from his house's front door.

Only a couple of us were able to make it and were absolutely gobsmacked when he arranged for us to be given complimentary membership of the club. He also insisted that, whenever we were in the area, we should knock in his door to see if he wanted to come out to play, which we did few times.

Lovely bloke.

I must admit the thought crossed my mind that the quality of the video not to mention the camera view looked a bit wrong for the era and the technology back then. I think perhaps it might be a 1953 BRM V16 driven by AN Other in more modern times. Perhaps a GoPro type camera rather than a super 8 or similar camera that would have been available in 1953!

I note in the comments there is a mention of Stirling having driven one, but not saying this was a video of Stirling at the wheel.

Great video anyway, regardless of who and when. The sound was good enough on its own.

Edit: Just noticed the poster / uploader on youtube goes by the name of "FollyFilms"

I would agree with all of that, & also Viva's comments about road signs - certainly a 'SLOW' painted on the road looked a bit modern for 1953. Also, he seemed to spend most of the time on the wrong side of the road - surely a bit risky should a 1953 Ford Popular come tottering the other way?

Sorry to burst your bubble, Baubel! The soundtrack was good though...

The Blue sign at the start of the film tells you its not real for 1953. I think it is a more modern road car with the V16 sound track added. Good to watch though.

When I fist saw the video on U Tube, I remembered that Peter had posted on the Shell Oils series, so felt he would probably appreciate it. Of course once exposed to the glare of tenthers beady eyes, we see a new slant on things.

I agree that first impressions are awe, but then a closer look makes one wonder, just prior to the no limit signs there is a woman pushing a pram along the road, and full screen you can see more detail and colour, so not Stirling in 1953. However, the driver has no care for the highway code by his cutting corners.

Maybe as suggested it a simple road car with dubbed sound track, and speeded up to give the impression of speed, either way it is good viewing.

On another point, many comments refer to the engine sound, being very old I saw the cars race many times, and can assure you that the noise was a lot more ear splitting than sound tracks we see. The sound could physically hurt your ears up close, and it carried for long distances, at Aintree you could follow the the car around the entire circuit on the sound alone, rising and falling corner by corner, unforgettable.

Sorry to have bothered you all.

As always Baub, it was no bother. Your post sparked interest, thought and discussion (should I add 'as always' in here too?) which is what this place is supposed to be about...
(I also didn't think that the soundtrack/speed didn't really match the road either so I'm sure the two weren't really connected).

I think you are right .
The camera position seems to be about 3 Ft above the road , which is too high for the front of the claimed car , and if it was up at drivers head / rollcage level , it would show the front part of the car .
At one point , there is a gearchange in the middle of a very slippery bend , and most sensible drivers would not do that .
So , almost certainly filmed from a different car , probably going a lot slower , and the soundtrack added afterwards .

Very good, Peter.

That re-awakens a memory. Back in the 80's (I think) I was driving through Bourne on my home from a busy day in Norfolk, and I saw the top a BRM transporter behind a wall. Being a long time supporter of the car, I stopped to investigate, wandering in to a yard where I found a number of mechanics working on various BRM models. They were quite happy to stop and explain what was about, and I left with a few stick on BRM badges. A shame I had so little time, as I assume that the workshop must have been Raymond Mays old family home. still a magic moment for a passing motorist.

Explains why when not in the middle of the road it tends to be on the right hand side. Also the strange slow down after the first junction.

And there is the brief glimpse of a people carrier type vehicle with body coloured bumpers.

I wonder if the sound track matches that which came with Mason’s book?

My all time favourite film is when the M4 opened from Slough to Swindon . There is a chap in MK2 Jag telling and showing drivers how to drive on the new Motorway . He comes up behind a slow Herald . First the lights flash , then again and finally toots the horn to get the Herald driver to move out of the fast lane . Chap gets the message and moves over but gives the Jag driver a two fingered wave as the he goes pass . I’m sure this movie could be found and posted .

It's interesting how things differ between the UK and other countries.

In the UK - someone intending to drive faster than you and flashing their lights is considered an aggressor, or some other negative connotation. Everything becomes a challenge and they are considered the 'enemy' on the road.

In Italy - someone intending to drive faster will indicate with a flash of their lights and it is considered a courtesy to other road users. At the earliest opportunity, the car in front will move out of the way and both drivers will go about their journey without further care or thought.
