And bear in mind you don't immediately need to dive right into everything being bright orange.

I did my first few meetings in my ordinary outdoor walking gear (just make sure it's not red or yellow - important flag colours !). That and a cheap pair of welding gloves will get you going. You can do a few meetings, wait until you're certain marshalling is going to stick with you, while saving up for the proper gear.

I would certainly recommend them (as numbersix can attest) *but* they are very expensive unless you can find a good deal - they're Peltor SportTac active ear defenders, which allow you to have conversations with people without having to take them off. The tendency with ear defenders is to partially remove them, and then not put them back on properly...

(goes to look at prices) - they're a lot more expensive now than they were when I bought mine!

O yeah, my only theory is get some overalls in the right colour and quality as i do not have a walking gear either and if i don't like the world of marshaling ( i don't think this will happen) i can use these for painting the new house once we get one!

At the beginning of the season when I got my MSA card in the post it was accompanied with a high vis orange trainee marshals tabard. Why not just wear that over suitable outdoor clothing to start with.
Once you are hooked, like I quickly was, go for the AWS probans. When you claim back your BMMC subsidy of £40 a set of GPX overalls will cost you £20.

I'm not sure if this is completely relevant, but when I have attended race meetings this year (in a non-working capacity due to ill-health) and therefore dressed in mufti, I have felt really out of place. Wearing my orange probans not only makes me feel part of the team but gets you respect from competitors and spectators alike.

BTW: Magneton's post should be published in all regional newsletters and in that MSA publication as well. Brilliant!
