Don't like the idea - it would penalize highly these drivers who are driving on backmarker teams.
For fresh blood, I prefer an occassional 3rd car per team for youngsters. |

But you are missing the point a bit Kieran: this is just innocent speculation or a what if thing. I have no intention of getting anywhere unless someone here secretely works for BE or the FIA!

Remember the 70's when there was a 3rd McLaren and Brabham every so often. Then there was a terrible rumour that Benetton wanted to run a 3rd car sponsored by McDonalds or something in 1996?!! Shame it never came off though. Gives upcomers a chance in a good car rather than endelssely trolling around in tailend equipment. |

But isn't that broadly what we're getting?? We're going to effectively have 4-car teams in 2008 - only half the number of them. Essentially, you're making the same point as me (wise man ) that there just need to be more seats - whether they be permanent ones or one-offs probably doesn't matter.

Seriously though, a 3rd Car option would be great giving a chance for younger drivers to show off their talents. If every team had a 3rd car but only 2 could qualify, that would make qualifying exciting. |

Having 3 cars per team with only 2 allowed to race would put a lot of pressure on the drivers in qualifying, and encourage teams to run younger drivers in one car (in that situation, requiring that one of the drivers have done less than 50 races, or scored less than 100 points, before the season could work).

That would not be a bad idea. Be interesting to see more cars on the grid and some of the Friday drivers/testers get a shot.

perhaps a guaranteed seat for the previous years GP2 champ on one of the smaller teams, with the other teams kicking in money to pay for that ride. if its going to a developmental league why not have a prize for winning? to take it one step further it could be extended to be a promotion/relegation system for drivers (who have under x amount of f1 races) between the 2 series. |

But this year there is Sutil, Kovalinen, Hamilton, Kubica and Davidson back from the testing yard. That's 22% of the field - quite good really. And Speed, Liuzzi, Rosberg, Albers have less than 3 seasons - in total that's 41% of the field - quite good really.

Well I am not sure about the "pre-qualifying" bit. Anyone remember when this was done in F1? You had some rather shoestring operations involved.
My take would be that the FIA could say that for each race the grid will be limited to the 22 plus X number of 3rd cars. At some tracks you could have say 6 more (Imola or Indy) and at others, none (Monaco). If you allow six, than you do the regular quali and the six fastest third cars make the grid. |
