Before we all begin the "Montoya is the greatest" thang again. Bear in mind he got an extra lap over the others (except MS). Ergo I would have expected RS to match those times or even better them because of the track conditions.

What is amazing is the way the track suddenly got faster and faster in the space of five minutes!

Still, I hope Montoya holds it together (for his own sake). After all its a track he knows as well as anybody out there.

I would too - if Ralf had had one more lap after his 1:52.9 lap I think he would have beaten Montoya's time. But, as it stands, Montoya was quicker and that's fair enough. He timed it just that bit better than Ralf did, so credit to him.

Piquet: I did miss something. Montoya's timing was also better than Ralf's.

And JPM just revealed that he had a modified "dry set-up" instead of the wetter setups used by his immediate rivals...that might explain the big time gap...but he deserves pole here.

Surely he deserves credit for realising if he got out early enough he could stay out for that extra lap, his tyres would work better etc. - its not as if the officials awarded him an extra lap over and above what everyone else get now is it!!

Just one it looked like it was going to be another boring qaulifying session out of nowhere comes Juan, Ralf, Heins, etc, to shake things up.

Well done to Montoya on his well earned pole position. And, as hard as it is for me to say this(being a Ralf fan) Juan was better then Ralf today just as he was in Germany. There I said it and it wasn't easy(happy now?)!!.

Unbelievable performance by HHF to qualify 4th in that Prost.

All in all a good qaulifying session, and extremely surprising one to.

Wrong-o. It's a modified chassis...modified doesn't necessarily mean better.
1) Why would they modify the chasis if it wasnt for the better?

2) They would have already used this chasis in testing. Ralf, when asked, was pleased that the team chose him to have the new chasis. Why would he be happy using a chasis that you had already tested- Because its BETTER!

I'm am completely hungover at the moment, so I'll excuse myself if this post (and others) make no sense, contain foul language or have spelling mistakes.

However:

JPM doubters can shove anything they want now up their arse. Almost a second ahead of Ralf, and 2.6 seconds ahead of the great TGF!!!! (I was aiming at sarcasm, but I wouldn't know if I pulled it off, damn booze! )

Frentzen rocked the show with a superb qualifying performance. Wonder what Eddie is thinking with his drivers so far back????

Both Arrows and Minardi DNQ'd. Wonder if they'll start? Probably. The evil one would want a full grid.

Anyway, I'm about to pass out. So Have a good one everyone.

The Great One will bounce back tomorrow.

At least this is the most interesting starting grid we've seen for a while. Yeah Montoya got a bit of luck, but he made his own. Ralf wont be conserving any engines during the race this time, he'll have to go for it. With Montoya in front of him and big bro behind, i can see Ralf losing it within the first few laps.

Really? Ralf losing it? As opposed to Montoya, the man who raced 3 laps in his last wet race and then spun off?

With respect Crash and Burn,Montoya`s dry pole was at Hockenhiem, where he had the fastest car at a super highspeed track,so i don`t think he`s brilliant at qualifiying at all.

As for the race,i think it`s become obvious he`s out of his league.

Hockenheim is quite difficult actually because of the Motodrome section. Setting a sole high speed set-up will make you suffer big time in the Motodrome and will cost you valuable time. Montoya managed to master the Motodrome superbly and that's where he made the difference to Ralf. Their time after the two sections of straights was equal or a few thou to the advantage of Ralf iirc.

Along the way you'll pick up some stuff about F1 on this board, Aggy, don't worry.

This learning would be similar to Montoya`s improvement since Canada and Monaco where he embarrassed himself worldwide.

As i said elsewhere, when you have the best car,you must win..in fact the expectation is WDC,but their reliability has prevented that,so it`s up to the drivers to capitalize on poles and so on,not stall and then lose 4 places fighting backmarkers.

Isn`t it curious the problems keep happening to Montoya.

Nothing peculiar happened to Montoya today. All the grid has suffered from the same problems one or more times throughout this and past races. This GP three guys lost their original grid positions, four guys lost their front wings, two engines blew, two transmissions seized, one diff malfunctioned, one air jack failed, one fuel nozzle jammed, about four times cars came into contact of which one resulted in Lucky's severe crash, some minor driver errors resulted in overtaking opportunities for others and TGF almost crashed off out of boredom.

But that's the wrong side to look at. You're looking at the negative side way too much. See it from the bright side. TGF won his 52nd, DC affirmed his second place in the standings, Fisico put Benetton back on the GP-map with a very strong podium and Alesi scored a point in his second race for Jordan. You'll learn.
