I just think that Jan had the wrong attitude for F1 in general, and Jackie Stewart in particular. |

IIRC, Jan Mugnussen was sacked AFTER his well driven 6th place in Canada 98, only to be replaced by Jos "Mr.Ordinary" Verstappen, who underachieved more than Magnussen and was also dropped at the end of the season. Sounds a bit like the whole Pizzonia/Wilson Jaguar 03 debacle.

Regardless of the stewart situation, I don't think that jan would have done well in F1 just because of his personality. If you want to beat the red baron, you've got to pound out the laps in testing and then be willing to sit there and pour through the data all night with the engineers. Jan was more interested in the parties and all the fun stuff that goes with it. Also, I don't think that Jan is a pressure player in the sense that he can deal with all of the corporate and managerial pressures that are imposed on a driver in F1. Touring Cars and Sports cars are much more his speed and he will always do well there.

Jan wasn't prepared to take the pressure and the hype. Until he got into F1 everything had been more or less a walkover for him. And maybe he just matured too late.
But I'm sure that if he was given the chance today in a decent car he would be in top six. Too bad he won't get a shot at again. |

But he's enjoying himself with his touring car and sportscar drives and proving there is life beyond F1.

There was one more thing wrong in that team, Jan had complained about his race engineer, after that Jos complained about that race engineer, they still did'nt replace him, but suddenly after Herbert had his first test(and complained) he was replaced. one of the things the engineer did wrong?? Changing the wing settings on the car without telling Jos, at Hockenheim in qualifying, Jos did'nt know the wing settings where changed so when he braked for the first chicane he went straight on through the gravel(thinking he could brake just as late as the laps before) Last edited by steve nielsen; 9 Feb 2004 at 23:15. |

The Legionaire's Disease thing is new to me, although Yannick Dalmas suffered from it in late 1988, and underperformed to the point of being fired in mid-1989 as a result.
The second Stewart/Jaguar has tended to be a career-killer. Only de La Rosa against Irvine in parts of 2001, and Herbert with a strong late 1999, have really made it work. Rubens had very strong support from Jackie and Ford, and no one really helped Jan learn the ropes. There were lots of mechanical failures in the first year as well, which prevented Jan from really showing his true form, or getting enough seat time - they, understandably, gave Rubens the bulk of the testing. |

Some of the mechanical failures were caused by Jan though - at the Nurburgring IIRC he constantly gave it full revs going out of the pits - consequently the clutch failed. This was in an ITV documentary about the Stewart team shown over the winter of 1997/8

Irvine only ever drove the number 1 Jaguar !!!!! not number 2. He was the second best driver in F1 remember.

Just another one of dozens of drivers who could go fast in F3 but never made the step up to F1.
Smoking never slowed down guys like Patrick Depailler or James Hunt. |

There are people on this earth that are born with more natural talent than the rest in all given field. There is the odd bloke who has perhaps been given more of a gift than anyone has ever been given before. Perhaps to be the best there ever was. If this person makes priority one in their life to have a damn good time, rejoice with them! Good on them! you only live once! But do not feel sorry for them because they never became the best. Especially when they could have clearly achieved this.
