The Unsung Heroes are obviously shy! Surely someone other than a Marshall will allow us to know how they are prepared for their role? Yes, I accept johnagee posted to another theme, but come on stand up and be counted!

I have been emailed with the following regarding specialist marshalls for rescue units:

The Vehicles


The vehicles are required to be licensed by the controlling body of UK Motorsport, the Motor Sports Association (MSA). The MSA regulations specify the minimum level of equipment to be carried by a Rescue Unit although the majority of vehicles are equipped well in excess of this minimum specification.

A Motorsport Rescue Unit carries a comprehensive amount of medical equipment together with tools specifically designed to assist in removing a trapped driver from his vehicle.

Rescue Units are manned entirely by unpaid volunteers and all crew members are required to hold current MSA Rescue licenses, and in some instances have added to this basic requirement by taking additional recognised emergency aid courses, such as First Aid at Work, usually in their own time.

The MSA has a recognized scheme for people who wish to train for a Rescue License. The minimum requirements for acceptance for training are as follows:


Race/Trackside/Stage Rally experience

Attend one approved Marshal training day including fire training and radio procedure training

Possession of a valid First Aid Certificate is recommended

Gain the endorsement of a Crew Chief on an existing Rescue Unit

Minimum age of 18

Once a Trainee has a licence they will need to complete the training programme detailed on the training record card with signatures. They must also collect 10 signatures within 2 years from an Instructor or Crew Chief for attendance at:
8 Race, Rally or Speed events with at least 3 from each of two of these disciplines
2 Training Days

Once the Trainee has fulfilled these criteria they will be proposed, by their Crew Chief , to attend an approved MSA Rescue Licence Assessment where they will demonstrate to the Assessors their familiarity and competence in the operation of all rescue equipment and the identification and preparation of medical equipment.

Licensed Rescue Crew members must attend and pass 3-yearly re-licensing assessments and must satisfy their Crew Chief that training attendances have been completed between assessments."

I started marshalling when i was 16, 1969 it took me 4 hours to get to Brands varios trains and buses. I must confess i was late a few times and missed singing on which meant i could go arround the paddock and get ideas on how to build my first car. The marshalls were so freindly to me i allways give them an enthusiastic wave on the slowing down lap " they probally think i am daft " but i allways get a good wave back. Brilliant

One group of people I have failed to mention are our own club and series organisers/volunteers/etc. The reason Formula Junior continues to grow and maintains an exciting racing calendar is because of the dedicated person we have as chairman, Duncan Rabagliati, without whom we probably would not be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the marque this year (2008) worldwide (plus other willing members aiding as required). I am sure this is the case with all historic racing - so thank you one and all.
