Zanardi over Herta at Laguna Seca. No doubt in my mind. But I remember Zanardi in Cleveland one year, I think it was 97, and he was hunting down Gil deFerran for the lead late in the race. Gil overtook a backmarker (Jourdain?) on a short straight, with Zanardi right behind. Coming to a corner, Alex was taking no prisoners and absolutely forced his way by the slower traffic. It was as if he never touched the brake pedal as he dove for the inside and the other driver had no choice but to pull offline and conceed. The only pass made on that particular corner all day. Zanardi went on to take deFerran and win the race.

Calm down.

Btw, that comment was not meant for you, macdaddy. Zanardi defined Indy racing for the three years he was there.

Macdaddy , now were really talking , what about Cart in 97 ??at canada when Zanardi forced his way through on Herta at the bit before the short tunnel , Herta ended up in the tyres . Alex was so tough on track , I really would have loved to see him come through and acheive sucess in F1 .Im sure given time and machinery he would have pulled off some moves in F1 that would have made it into this thread also.

Poor Herta seemed to be on the receiving end of Zanardi's moves a lot of times, didn't he!

I've a top three:

1. G Villeneuve and Arnoux's duel at Dijon 79. That couldn't be done with today's cars.
2. Senna's first lap at Donington 93. He was both 'the maestro' and 'the rainmaster'.
3. J Villeneuve around the outside of M Schumacher in Estoril 96. That was his greatest victory ever.

I can recall a heap of times when Zanardi pulled off move after move.

- Laguna '96

- Cleveland '97 - went through the pits when they were closed and was forced to the back of the pack. Passed everyone, culminating in macdaddy's deFerran pass.

- Vancouver '97 - Running in 3rd, he locked up and went straight ahead at turn 3, and ended up last. Made his way back to 3rd or 4th, before making exactly the same mistake, and going back to the midfield, before charging back through the field to get back to 4th at the end. That was one of the most exciting drives I've ever seen.

- Michigan '97 (I think). Went straight between two guys going into turn 1.

- Long Beach '98 - came out of the pits and nearly went a lap down by deFerran. Passed just about the whole field to get Herta in the closing stages.

- Toronto '98 - amazing move on Andretti at turn 3 in the closing stages of the race for the win.

- Toronto 2001 - Passed Takagi (I think going into the tricky turn 8). Then passed one guy on the outside of turn 3, before ducking up the inside of another car in turn 5 immediately after.

Alex did make some good moves in F1, it's just that the rubbish Williams-Supertec meant we didn't see them on camera.

A king of overtaking!

Top two for me and they've both been posted already are, in no particular order -
Zanardi over Herta at the Corkscrew, Laguna Seca and Senna's first lap at Donnington in '93

Passing Moves

Road America 1994

J.Villeneuve outbraking both Al Unser Jr. and Paul Tracy going into turn one after the long start/finish straight.Amazing car control from the little Canadian.

Estoril 1996

J.Villeneuve passing M.Schumacher around the outside at the Parabolica.Truly outstanding.

Jerez 1997

J.Villeneuve on M.Schumacher at Dry Sac.The most outstanding pressure move I've ever seen.Villeneuve completely fooled Schumacher and left Schumacher full of disgarce.

Zandvoort 1979

G.Villeneuve on A.Jones at the famous Tarzan corner.Villeneuve outbraking Jones to pull alongside the Williams on the outside. In a colossal clash of wills the two held their ground around the corner until Villeneuve put the power down a fraction quicker than Jones and pulled ahead. The crowd gave a tremendous cheer at such bravado on one of motor racing's most difficult corners.

Osterreichring 1979

G.Villeneuve's start at the Austrian GP.At the green light,Gilles sitting 5th,his T4 sprang forth as if it was shot from a cannon, zooming past Jabouille's Renault on the inside, then squeezing between the similar car of Arnoux and the pit wall in a space hardly wider than the Ferrari.Gilles powered up the hill into the lead, ahead of Jones,Lauda,Arnoux,Regazzoni, and the rest."I was half expecting a yellow car to come through at the start," said Jones,"but no way a red one.I was really taken aback and thought, where the hell did he come from!?"

Donington 1993

A.Senna's brilliant opening laps at Donongton were special.Senna starting fifth, dispatched of Schumacher's Benetton exiting the Redgate, then blasted around the outside of Wendlinger's Sauber through the Craner Curves.Hill's second place Williams was taken care of at McLeans and Prost's sister FW15 was neatly outbraked at the Melbourne Hairpin before the end of the lap.Amazing.

Gotta go with the Michigan 2001. Aerodynamic rules let to slipstreaming 'all over tha place'. Right up to the end there were 4 or 5 possible winners. One of em being Patrick Carpentier. He was dicing it out with Dario amongst others, but didn't seem to have the momentum quite going. But then 'The Tag' Tagliani rushed to the rescue. Drove down the inside, passing literaly everyone and provided his teammate with the tow that got him victory. Best 5 laps of motorracing I have ever witnessed.

All those moves pale in comparison to Piquet's move on Senna in 1986, at Hungary, around the outside of the first corner, completly sideways - ride em' cowboy!

Wurz banging wheels with Shumie (M) at Monaco was pretty entertaining stuff, aside from other title contenders, I don't think anyone has given him such a hard time.

Arnoux/Villeneuve at Dijon was amazing; so too Zanardi at the Corkscrew.

I always thought Piquet passing Senna at Hungaroring down the inside into turn one in '86 was pretty special - car absolutely sideways, everything locked up, just like a go-kart. And then he ran wide and Senna nipped back down the inside of him on the exit. Still very good while it lasted ...

G Villeneuve at the start of the 81 Spanish GP at Jarama. Overtook something like eight cars into the first corner and went on to win when he shouldn't have! Gilles also trying to keep back Rosberg in the Long Beach GP in 82 at the end of the long straight.

Senna overtaking Prost in Japanese GP 88 when he won title. Anyone see just how out of shape that car got from the overhead camera ...

In F1, that's the one for me. What a great season that was too, my favourite season review video.

If i can just remind everyone about Senna's first lap of Donnington, that he had a full wet setup, and Traction Control on his car, which other cars did not have, ( Schu was on a half wet / dry setup)

Yeah but don't forget that he was in an underpowered car compared to the Williams (which also had TC) and the Benetton (which i don't think did).

Also set up only goes so far, what happenned on that lap was amazing, regardless of set up and IMO in the same situation would never be repeated by another driver. It was one of those drives.

I would just like to say , that at Donnington 93 many of the F1 drivers were complaining about a greasy slippery track that was caused by the nearby airport and aviation fuel thats gets a thin film laid on the track from the aircraft .

Ive never forgot about that , and to me that makes Ayrton's first lap even more special . He done is on a damp/wet track that was already very slippery when it was dry .

R ,the chicane pass by shumi that you can't quite recall was at the nurburgring '95(?).Alesi went for 2(?) stops, micheal 3.
Alesi was leading ok into the closing laps albeit with very sad tyres.Shumi was closing in mega quick in the last couple of laps and just flew past jean in the chicane.Jean didn't even TRY to fight him,he had position going into the chicane, just gave up.To this day i still don't know if jean lost his bottle or he was genuinely struggling just to stay on the track.I DO know that micheal was dumb to take such a risk,he did the same thing at the next race (adelade?)and jean was having none of it this time, claiming his line and putting them both out. This event sticks in my mind because it looked like alesi and ferrari were at LAST going to win something on genuine pace.very sad

I would also like to chip in with a comment about donnington '93.Arton's opposition were on settings that required them to stick to the racing line, while his car, with wet settings, could get good grip allmost anywhere on the track. Most drivers in arton's position would have passed a car or two.I bet he was having a ball(if he ever let himself have fun)!
Shumi was in an identical situation in spain '96.
