OK, Oriol ServiÃ*, the Catalan CART driver, won the Indy Lights title in 1999 with 5 second places.
Tom Sneva won the USAC championship without any wins in 1976 and Penske fired him afterwards. Champions that didn't win the most races: 1958- Hawthorn, 1, to Moss' 4 wins 1964- Surtees, 2 to Clark's 3 wins 1967- Hulme won 2 races to Clark's 4 wins (again Jimmy) 1977- Lauda won 3 races to Andretti's 4 wins 1979- Scheckter won 3 to Jones' 4 wins 1982- the above-mentioned case of Rosberg... Prost, Lauda, Pironi, Watson and Arnoux all won one more race than Keke 1983- Piquet 3, Prost 4 1984- Lauda 5, Prost 7 1986- Prost 4, Mansell 5 1987- Piquet 3, Mansell 6 1989- Prost 4, Senna 6 Seems like the system used lately rewarded race wins more than anything. Wins will not be as valuable now! |

Marcus........... your definatley right about Emilio Alzamora, do you remember the last race of that season? Marco Malandri could have won the championship (i believe) if Alzamora didn't finish and he (MM) won and they had a coming together about 2 laps from the end, EM didn't fall off and MM won the race, but not the title.

Melandri deliberately tried to kick Alzamora out, but he didn't succeed. But that's not the topic...
I think that with the new points system wins will not be as valuable, and maybe there's another champion who has not the most wins... |

OK Anoraks I know I’m straying somewhat from the topic but here’s one.....
Who was it that first ‘sprayed’ champagne (instead of just swigging it) celebrating their victory? |

The driver who started the tradition of spraying champagne after winning a race was Dan Gurney, who sprayed the bubbly after he and A.J. Foyt won the 1967 Le Mans 24 Hours in a Ford Mk IV.
according to most web sites...... |

I believe that actually was an accident. The cork just unexpectedly popped up and Gurney tried to hold the champagne with his fingers.... Well, it sounds more like a legend than a fact, but certainly is a nice story..

interesting that Dan Gurney gets the glory for the spraying thingy , as I said above Jackie Stewart actually claims he started it all , I have it on video when he used to work for Channel 9 in Australia on the GP telecasts , I dont know what is the truth but he sure claimed it was he who started it all
funny how peoples minds get a bit fuzzy as they get older. |
