Back off topic again, it was popular in the '70s for young guys to paint their Aussie muscle cars up like S&H Torinos, sad huh?

That was the basis of Group A. Also Group A allowed the alteration of bodywork as long as you couldn't see it. Hence relocated strut tops etc.

Nope 5000 it was and 5000 it stayed for Group 1. *I believe the number was 25000 of the particar model was the group A requirement. Group 2 allowed the use of competition components and extended bodywork to cope with revised wheel sizes. However you had to start with 5000 examples. You also needed to base the engine on the production block so Ford produced the RS 3100 with ducktail (to provide theprofile) and a fuel inject Essex engine. Cosworth got hold of the engine and hey presto. The GAA was born. 4 valves per cylinder and serious power

Grp 1 says 5000 or FIA homologation papers, this is the same as Grp2 or Grp4. I've just been checking about the Sunbeam Lotus, they only built 2700 of them but I wanted to know what they were homologated for.
Turns out the Sunbeam was homologated for both Grp2 and Grp4 just not Grp1 So I'll stick with my 1.6.

But you couldn't get those papers for group 1 unless you could prove you had produced 5000 base examples. The Lotus Sunbeam and the RS 3100 prove the point. They got papers on the back of the original cars.
