Dont compare times to months and months ago, compare to times that day. N/H were at Penske speed on the day.

I wasn't asking for that Russfeld. I understand they had both car types at the test of the same day. A little touchy are we?

Sorry Russfeld, I guess I am. I didn't see where your response fit anywhere else on this thread. Now I do. Please accept my apology.

Interesting to note that Paul Newman is supposedly actively trying to locate a title sponsor for CART, which suggests that that's where his loyalties are. Haas apepars to be the one elaning towards the IRL - a lot of the CART forum speculation suggests that they could split, with Haas forming an IRL team and Newman a CART one.

Last year, N-H was the last to formally say what they were doing and Haas has said they were talking to Toyota. Think maybe Boots' speculation from the CART board has some merit.

If they were splitting i dont think NEWMAN-haas would have issued a press release about Indy04

"Your reasoning is 100% acceptable, Boots, I just wondered how long will they resist seeing Penske, Ganassi, Nunn, Andretti etc. racing, from the wall, without being part of the series... "

All they have to do is look at the stands.

There seems to be more teams than spectators.

CART may very well be near death, but the IRL is nothing more than death, while still breathing.

I should make some effort to deny what you say, but it's not necessary: Newman-Haas, with their decision to be spare dealer, are the first to bet on IRL good wealth (dead series--> no spares to sell, did you realize it?)

About attendance, well you should watch the races and verify that, in a good part of them (not all, certainly)stands are well crowded.
Obviously we all know that Open wheel racing in the States is far from attracting the crowds of Nascar, except for Indy500 (oops!it's IRL: maybe 400,000 teams running over there? ); however they are many more than people attending CART venues (let's get that straight, i'm not anti-CART, but facts are facts)

Whatever extent they run IRL, it will be in addition to CART.

How long are the current drivers contracted for and would one of them run in the IRL?

A good idea to be a spare parts supplier to the IRL. There are not many small crashes in the IRL so spares could be lucrative business. The best thing about the IRL is that nice guys like Tony Renna, who is a pretty average road racer, can get the oppotunity to be competitive in this less demanding discipline.

Not going there again in the "less demanding discipline" route again, champ. Already discussed. IMO, as always and forevermore, say drag racing, road racing, oval racing, off-road racing in different machines are DIFFERENT, not more or less demanding.

agreed.

Putting my mod hat on here.

Lets please not go down this route of less demanding and fighting between the two series please.

Actually, becoming spare dealer is lucrative according to the number of cars you providder runs.
In the current season, with just 4-5 cars per race (except Indy of course), could hardly break-even.
Entering the series could be a way to increase the total movement.

Recent news is that they've openly committed themselves to CART or whatever it will be called next year (I read an interview with Newman - can't find the link though) but the inference from the interview is that if everything happened to go pear-shaped with CART, then they'd be tooled up and ready to race in the IRL. As to those out there who see with some relish, that this rumour signals the final nail in the coffin for CART I would say, that the situatin is actually more buoyant and positive in CART at the end of this season than it was last season. There will be a CART series next year...

As to any commitment to IRL it seems they're only interested in competing in the Indy 500, probably for the prestige and to satisfy the sponsors.

No doubt about it; TG was, earlier this year, rumoured to add some road races to the IRL 2004 schedule, had CART dead, in order to catch the most prestigiuos ones.
The official release of 2004 schedule contains 100% oval races; which means that his dream is, if not deleted, at least postponed...
