Dino IV should be qualifying in the top 5 on the gridDino IV should be qualifying in the top 5 on the grid
Past:
1979 Volkswagen Scirocco 1.6
1983 Subaru Justy 1.2
1991 Alfa Romeo 155 1.8 TS
1997 Alfa Romeo 155 1.6 TS 16V
2000 Audi A6 2.5 TDI
In the period from uni to work. I got the Scirocco for free from a friend when he went abroad and was still approved for 2 months. Worst condition you could imagine, rustholes everywhere, suspension worn out, ignition off didn't work anymore so had to starve it in first gear. On the last day I took it for a final spin, had a 100mph 360-spin in a highway tunnel bend (the suspension couldn't cope with the concrete dilitations anymore and the back came round ) and delivered it to the scrapyard.
The Subaru took me to my traineeship steadily. Wind head on in the morning meant 90mph, wind in the back in the afternoon meant 105 mph. Once the hood flew open at 100 mph as well while I was overtaking someone, still overtook him and then pulled over to bend everyhting back in shape. Bad.
The Alfa 155's we're a joy to experience. Great handling. First one was of the first series and had numerous problems. Last one was of the last series and was really bulletproof.
The Audi was by far the worst. Diesel Turbo Tiptronic really didn't go smoothly it was either on or off. And there is also something totally wrong with the balance of that car either the track/wheelbase isn't right or the caster was set too pointy I still don't know but it drove like it was on flat tires and in the middle of a Tornado. After a few months returned it to my boss and swore him to never drive a company diesel ever again. (let's see how long that will last, the leasing-mafia is increasingly having regulations favour lease-cars and discouraging using your own)

Present:
1974 BMW E6 2002 Touring
1986 BMW E30 320i
1988 Porsche 944 Turbo S
The 2002 I bought a while ago (5 years or so) and is now being restored.
I bought the 320i 3 years ago and it is by far the best thing I have been steering in (except from sportscars ofcourse). We have been to Spain in it twice, heavy loaded with camping gear. Did 600 km Madrid-Barcelona in 4 hours which is an average I have not recorded in any of the other cars. Return trip from Barcelona to Amsterdam in 12 hours precisely. Awesome and now a daily joy.
The Porsche is the factory homologation model for the Supercup back in the days. Great car, great balance, big Turbo, so lagging until 3.000rpm and then KABOOM, off you go. 0-60 in 5,3s and 170+ mph. Technique is bulletproof. Took it over from my Dad and am now wondering what to do with it. Race or restore.
Currently looking for a faster E30 325i or special E30 (i.e. Alpina B6) and an E30 325i Touring (family expansion coming up ). Cheers.

My list is very short:
1987 BMW 325i
1987 BMW 325es
1985 BMW 323i

Hopefully in the near future (3 months?) I'll be adding one to the list. Probably not a BMW. I'm thinking either a WRX or an RX-8. The 20th Anniversary GTI is nice, but I need more power (than my friend has). He's got a Mazda 6.

Now let me see, where do I start this sadly rather dull list:- (the year is the registration, not when I got it)

1967 - VW Kharman-Ghia
1972 - Datsun 100A "Cherry" (written-off)
1969 - Triumph Herald (yes, the Datsun was only third-party..... )
1971 - Mklll Cortina
1979 - MklV Cortina 2L 'S'
1978 - MGB GT
1985 - VW Golf GTi
1985 - Ford Orion 1600 (the most boring car in the world)
1989(ish) - Rover 214
1996 - Daewoo Espero
1999 - Daewoo Nubira
2002 - Daewoo Lanoz

As you can see, I have definitely gone down in the world........

2005 - BMW M3? (but only if I have lots of shopping to do..... - you won't get that one unless you visit the Sportscar & GT forum!)

Then I got married!

1983 Mk3 1300 Ford Escort
1989 1600 Vauxhall Cavalier
1995 1800 Ford Mondeo
1999 2000 Vauxhall Vectra

Next year I'm planning on a pre-Evo M3. Anybody out there own or owned one?

Well my list is short, although I have had my license for 20 years.
1979 Yamaha RD400 Daytona Special (I had it for a year, but to many near misses with cars to continue being a motorcyclist)
1969 Mustang Grande Coupe 351W/FMX auto (5.7liters) had this for 8 years, sold it when I realized that it didn't make me excited to work on it anymore
1978 Toyota Celica Coupe (a complete piece of ****, but gave its life to protect a newer acura in a icy street mishap)
1968 Chevrolet Camaro 350/200-4R (5.7 Liters) my current car, I will sell it when it doesn't excite me anymore, but currently I still enjoy it (and drive it everyday)
1994 Ford Ranger Pick-up This is my wife's ride, she digs it, and I find it good for picking up large 68 Camaro parts. Robert

I lived in New York for years where it wasn't worth owning a car, a brief hiatus in Grad School in Boston was powered by a
1.2 Renault (5) Le Car 3 door
and and later a more plush

Renault (5) Le Car 5 door.

8 years later

95 Saturn SL2-a gem that handled beautifully and was a delight to drive. her rather lovely behind destroyed by a cell-phone yakking college girl in a Toyota Supra who didn't notice my turn signal nor my brake lights. (Like, fer surre!)

89 SAAB 900S, Was the Mother-in law's and thus ingrate that I am., I should be more gracious, but I HATED that car. Rusty, flabby and truck-like. Not at all like the lovely SAABs I grew up on.

99 VW Passat Wagon Built during Oktoberfest, it was never quite right, something was always falling off, but with a set of wider tires and pretty Mille Miglia Cello wheels, looked sweet and handled nicely.

01 VW Golf 1.8T SWEET.

03 VW Passat Wagon 1.8T As dull as dishwater, not the delight its predecessor was. But its comfortable and a perfect highway cruiser.

88,renault 19, 1.4rt/tr. hated that car, so i only kept it for 6 months.
88, ford sierra, 1.6L estate, it wasent the most exciting car ever, but i really loved that car, never let me down and it was reliable.
93, ford mondeo 1.8GLX, had this car for 3 years, again not once did it let me down, and it was a very comfortable car, even crashed it once and it lived on.

current.

I started off with a 1988 1.2 Vauxhall Nova in bright yellow which was a great car. I kept that for just over 5 years.

When that car was having an unreliable phase I sold it for a 1990 1.3 Nova saloon which was a dog of a car and so I only kept it for 6 months.

After that it was a 1996 1.2 Vauxhall Corsa which was always underpowered and constantly annoyed me that it wasn't as fast as my first Nova.

My current car is a 2001 1.4 16V Vauxhall Astra which I'm perfectly happy with.

An endless list of Minis, so many I've lost count. And then:
1987 MG Metro
1991 Rover Metro GTi
1993 Citroen ZX Volcane
1997 Peugeot 306 DTurbo (note: AVOID)
1998 Rover 216 Si

And now the question is what comes next. I like the Rover very much, but fancy a change to something completely different. Probably an MX5.

Guy, your tastes are remarkably similar to mine! I'm quite a fan of Saabs, and I currently run a 2003 Impreza WRX 5 dr. Seriously considering a current model 9-5 Aero next time round, especially if my business mileage goes up any more. My main concern is how I'll adapt to the 9-5's relatively ungainly front drive handling characteristics after the superb sure-footedness of Subaru AWD.

SydLee should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
1978 Talbot Horizon - a poor start, fell to dust in the end.
1988 AX1100 - Company car - great fun
1988 Cavalier - company car boredom
1979 Audi 80 1600 with modified carb (twin-choke weber from a 2.0l Cortina) went well, drank fuel and blew itself up.
1977 Mk2 Escort 1300 - everyone should own one at least once in their life. Slightly sideways.
1981 Mk2 Cavalier 1600 - paint was falling off as powder!!
1978 Datsun 160JSSS Coupe - sprayed purple with black vinyl roof. Tasteless and very sideways.
1973 Mk3 Cortina was a 1300 but had a 1600 engine and original gearing - 90mph tops but got there quick, 18mpg - gulp. More sideways.
1986 Pug 309 1300 - huge mileage but did the job.
1987 Mk2 Cavalier 1600 - another with huge mileage (155k when I bought it) but v reliable and not a smoker
1998 Fiat Punto Sporting - company car hoot. Bright yellow and 65k in 27 months ain't bad, engine would rev for ever.
2001 VW Bora TDI PD115 - Company car, steady as she goes, great for overtaking - 2700miles around Europe in 2 weeks, av. 50mpg and saw 130mph.
Currently carless in Sydney - getting new Ford Falcon soon - company car again. Hopefully sideways.

You soon learn how much 'welly' you can give the car away from wet junctions, with plenty of torque available don't need to rag it everywhere which helps. Torque steer seems slightly worse on the lower powered 9-5 compaired to the Carlsson but I think that's because you are on the power for longer to get upto speed. The interior of the Saabs is a league above Subarus, the seats are probably the best in the world. The noise isn't as good though, although the new exhaust I've got helps (3" straight through) but remains silent in a cruise.

The 2003 Impreza and 2004 Legacy are huge steps forward for Subaru in terms of interior quality. Having said that, the interior, equipment and those seats are among the reasons for considering the 9-5, certainly if my mileage goes up. And it's "different" (i.e. not German!). And once it's rolling, it's actually quicker than the WRX!

And that torque figure for the Aero - 258 lb/ft at 1900rpm - is rather intoxicating... and, true to the legacy of the 9000 Carlsson, the Aero's in gear times (40-60, 50-70 etc) are still in 911/360 territory! (Is it just me that likes the idea of scaring the living outta BMW M3 drivers? )

I'll get me anorak.
