Yep. Except that's got no connection with MG and we are talking MG Metro 6R4 to be precise.

But you are also correct beause the rally sprint course could be used.

Had an email saying that another 3 - 4 drivers would be interested in this event if it ran.

If its ran as a sprint then the 3 classes could be allowed to run.

How's progress going with the 6R4 event? I mentioned it in the Pub just after this thread started and I keep getting asked when and where it is by friends!!!

Look forward to seeing the event take shape. Keep on it!!

The idea is with the MotorClub at the moment and they are having a meeting at their next committee meeting to discuss it so hopefully they will say yes as it would be beneficial to them, and the 6R4 owners and fans

It'd need to be on a sealed surface to make sure you get as many cars as possible - I doubt some of the sprinters and those with road going cars would fancy a blast onto the loose!

I would like it to be run on a sealed surface which is why I have contacted members of the proffessionally run Darlington and District Motorclub

I like this idea, but have you thought it through?

Taking the comments above it seems that perhaps we don't know whether we are looking at tarmac or gravel or rallycross cars.

Not a criticism by any means but perhaps a cautionary note.

From the very first post Peter
As there is a MK2 challenge over in Ireland, I wonder what the possibilities would be to run a similar event here with all the 6R4's that still compete today?

It could be based on a current rally or a rallysprint type event where they compete against the clock on a set out stage at an airfield or circuit

I have thought it through and spoke to some 6R4 drivers and got their feedback
I dont think I would be wanting this event to run If I hadn't thought it through properly which is why I have approached a proffesionaly run club hoping they take this event on.

Just got this through email

Hello Mark,

Having read the article in Motoring News, I would like to be kept up to date with your proposed 6R4 rally sprint challenge.

I own a 6R4 which has only done 2000miles since leaving the factory. It is in mint condition and as it left the factory.
I would be interested putting it into a sprint for my daughter Fiona Leggate.
Fiona has been racing for 2 years and this year she will be joining the British Touring Car Championship in July at Croft. She will be racing the 2004 ex-Muller Astra with the Vauxhall junior team Techspeed.
As long as dates do not clash with her Touring Car races and EERC races, we would be very interested in competing with our 6R4.
See Fiona's website for more details.

Please keep in touch.

Malcolm Leggate.

From the performance Metro Club
Hi Mark,

Just following up from the item I've just read in Motorsport News. Glad to see that the Rallysprint challenge is progressing, please keep me informed of developments.

The Club's Summer Magazine is due to be released very shorly so I'll put a item in similiar to the Motorsport News article under the Metro 6R4 page to attracted more 6R4 drivers.

Finally a couple of other points:

The Club would be interested in putting forward a Trophy for the winning 6R4 driver plus other prizes, plus I'm certain that Club Members would be willing to help out on the Event and promote it.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks, Dave.

All this makes you wonder just how many 6R4's there actually are still 'alive' doesn't it? Were there only the 200 homolagation cars built or were more made? Does anyone know if there is a 6R4 register that gives histories of each car (similar to the RS200 listing on www.rs200.org )

Should be a great event when it happens

Bert, have a look here as someone came up with a list about 12 months ago. This event sounds like a great idea, might have top pop a long and take look.

I think there where something like 220 cars built with the majority being club cars.

Regarding a 6R4 register a few of us 6R4 fans have lists of cars, reg numbers, owners etc but we brought this up on another forum as someone asked the same and personally I wouldn't put such info on a site without owners permission.

Good point and possibly not connected here but the Porsche 911 register and other car clubs such as the MGCC have records of cars and can at least release the number of cars registered without alluding to ownership deets.

So the register itself wouldn't be restricted just the personal details of location, ownership etc.

Anyway there's obviously a great enthusiasm for this. Do you think it could happen this year?

I hope so as I am trying like mad to get more people involved as I would like to see static displays and maybe trade stands etc

Just got this
Dear Mark,

As you probably know Rover V64V engines were used in Group C2 prototypes in the 80s. Three of these cars remain equipped with the engine, Hugh McCaig's Ecosse, and Richard Bateman and my Tigas.

If your sprint happens, and the tarmac is smooth enough, it might be fun to do a demonstration run. It's not practical to offer to compete because Group C cars are geared for a rolling start.

Anyway, just let me know if the idea appeals.

Best wishes,

Nick

one friday night after probably 10 pints of the local finest mr austin and mr rover were definatley abducted by the devil himself and persuaded to transform there tiny town car for the over 60's into a fire breathing monster and replace the rear seats with a nice big V6 motor and bin those 13' steel wheels and replace them with some more sustantial rubber and a suitably outrageous bodykit !!!!!! and then the story began.............

the idea of hopefully seeing 20-30 maybe even 40 of these monsters at the same time certainly brings a smile to my face with the like's of Mcrae, per ekland, dennis biggerstaff, john price, tony jannetta and the one and only Lawrence Gibson.

To watch Lawrence last year at Pembrey roll his into a very small ball, travel back to ireland re-shell and totally rebuild it ,then arrive at lydden hill only a few weeks later and watch him drive fully commited was a pleasure.

yes i agree with having subclasses but surely the day should be about overall honours ? who has the fastest 6R4 be it rallycross spec or rally spec ? sorry to show my ignorance but what is a DAM 4100 please remember im only a rallycross driver.

p.s. if anybody has a spare metro lying around collecting dust tucked away at the back of your garage i will happily blow the dust off it for you , one day i will get to drive one of these beasts before i reach the big chequred flag in the sky
