It ultimately comes back to something David Lister said on this forum a while back - at some point you've just got to accept that it's an expensive business. Or indeed an expensive hobby...

Have a look on the forums of dpreview.com - its among the best for technical info and highly opinionated posts on lenses and DSLRs.

maybe this will help mike. http://www.bythom.com/300AFSlens.htm

i'd imagine this would be a good lens if its an expensive hobby rather than an expensive business...if you get my drift.

Sorry for bringing this topic up but can someone please explain what "rechipping" is in camera talk?

Re-chipping is a term used mainly with referrence to Sigma lenses to be used on Canon bodies. Canon do not release details of their communication protocols between camera and lens, and 3rd party lens manufacturers like Sigma have to guess at it. Problems mainly seem to occur using older Sigma lenses on the new digital bodies, and the lenses have to be sent back to Sigma for new logic chips, so that they will work with the new bodies. Only lenses of a certain age need to be rechipped, most of the newer lenses will be fine, and some lenses are so old that Sigma simply won't re-chip them for you. Which lenses can and cannot be re-chipped i do not know.
